This is the charming little-brother (yet physically bigger) of its lil' VR1 and VR2 "big-sisters" :)

I've tried quite a handful ribbons these last two years. And listened to many, in online reviews.

The X1R surprised me A LOT when I got it. As soon as I held the package in my hands, and opened it, I could feel this was a better mic than anticipated.

Because I liked it so much, I later ordered sE's VR1 Voodoo ribbon mic, sorta like the older, more mature brother (or sister) of the X1R. I was surprised at how close they are, performance-wise. So I returned the VR1, as I feel it didn't add much, for the premium cost.

I've also compared it with NoHype Audio's LRM-2b which I also own. The X1R has the same high-frequency extension as the NoHype mic, but the latter does have louder highs. Around 4 dB louder, on average, between up til 11.5 KHz where their frequency responses meet again.

BUT, I mostly prefer the X1R. It has something going on, that just makes it sound so... Nice. I can't find the word for it. Perhaps it's the transformer, some harmonics, or simply its frequency curve.

Note: get the DM1 Dynamite inline-preamp for it! Read my review of that one, to see why.

Only thing missing: I would LOVE a hipass filter switch (preferably with two options) to tame the proximity effect (which isn't quite as intense as it can be with other ribbons, by the way).

This mic is a real winner for anyone wishing to record a guitar amp, drum OH or use it as a room mic.
Decision was to give this product a try over a cheap alternatives, as well as expensive mics in the range of several hundred euros or even more.
I have to confess that although have not much expierence with proven "industry standards" as Royer or Coles, SE X1R will be perfectly OK for my small project studio needs. It has nice push in the highs, therefore covers more applications IMHO. Also, lower frequencies are nicely balanced with highs, which gives perfect rounded full sonic picture achievable ony by ribbon mic, at least to my ears. That is especially noticeable in overhead or room mic application. Cymbals with fullnes of toms is just a bliss to hear! Warmth of a ribbon is retained, but as i said, slight push in highs (around 5-6kHz), just cuts through and makes this mic super all-rounder.... Recording a guitar amp gives a "neutral guitar signature" especially in comparison with SM57 which lacks some low frequencies. Here, lows are very musically balanced and show "fulness" of a guitar sound. Joy to hear "rounded distortion".
Pros&cons: this mic is a phantom protected, which is a great news for all of us concerned not to damage a ribbon mic. Please note that mic has a figure of 8 pattern and will accept reflections from a room.
Place for improvement is for sure lack of a pouch to keep the mic (you get a paper box with acoustic foam cutout). Therefore deduction of one star for features.
All in all no regrets, happy to have a ribbon in my collection :))

Great mics....you can use them for anything!!! We have got pair of these mics and we used them in several applications such as drum over heads, guitar cabs, acoustic guitar, vocals, Bass and even 50 piece choir....They do need a lot of input level though so if the source of sound level is low you might struggle a lot. Overall X1R microphones in my opinion are very versatile, sturdy (considering they are ribbon mics), and they reproduce quite natural sound almost identical to the source of sound. Well happy with them.
