Very flexible and crazy utility value
pieslice 19.04.2021
This has became my workhorse synth. It can produce a very wide range of sounds and the patchbay is crazy flexible - the patch points can be used to sculpt the sounds in the Neutron itself or they can be used as "free" modules for other synths (for instance S&H and Slew will be very useful features for most of the CV controlled analog gear).

Wave shaping oscillators and the filter sounds very good for the most of the time but the synth does become more and more chaotic if very extreme values are used - this might be a pro or con depending on your preferences.

This is not the easiest unit for the beginners; you really need to understand the internal signal routing to fully utilize this thing - it is not clearly communicated by the manual but there are good information found online how this thing works internally.

Sound and handling get only 4 stars because the BBD delay is very noisy and the unit requires a lot of tuning (not necessary a bad thing because it will train your ear).

I'm considering getting a second unit since these things seem to synergize with each other!

Gateway to modular for beginners, great addition for adepts
volhv 23.05.2019
The Behringer Neutron is a semi-modular, paraphonic analogue (apart from the digital LFO) synthesizer. If you are looking for best sounds for the price, and are not afraid to spend some time exploring its possibilities, you should consider the Neutron.

First of all, this is not a clone. It is a fresh take on a two-oscillator paraphonic, semi-modular, eurorack compatible synthesizer. The sounds are pure analog gold throughout the signal path. The 3340 oscillators sound great, and the possibility to sweep waveshapes brings new experimental possibilities. The MOFFAT filter has real in-your-face character, albeit from being a 2-pole filter. The unexpected addition of great sounding analog effects, the delay and the overdrive, make this a really versatile piece of gear.

The cons are about understanding the signal path. You really need to research to know, what the pre-patched signal path is to understand the full potential of the Neutron. I have also heard about the issues with product support, but for the price I was not surprised.

Excellent intro to modular
JuhoKo 05.09.2019
Not sure if there exists a more cost efficient way to dip your toes in the extremely non-cost-efficient Eurocrack pool. Gateway drug for sure but hey, you already knew that going in. Great sounding oscillators, pretty much all the useful utility modules you’d need and decent midi connectivity.

Not too keen on the lowpass filter design, it was the first thing I replaced with much better (to my taste) eurorack module. Also, cv midi clock out and a proper line in with amplification would have been a killer but for the price there’s nothing else quite like it. The overdrive module is a bit of an acquired taste but pretty much anything can be bypassed.

Just understand this – within 6 months of owning this thing I was already soldering my own DIY modules and bought another one + 1000€ worth of other eurorack modules. It wont stop there. This will happen to you too.

Great value

I've been looking at going into modular synthesis for a while now. The problem has been a quite high barrier of entry. The Behringer NEUTRON pretty much solves this by packaging a really nice starting package into a semi-modular desktop synthesizer while being unbelievably affordable. In addition, NEUTRON is easily worth the price as standalone synth. The fact that it's modular just brings so much more bang-for-buck.

I also like that I can route my other synths through the overdrive, filter, delay etc on the NEUTRON.

While being great for me, there are reasons not to get the NEUTRON:
-You don't want to deal with delays and timing issues with external synths(These are easy to deal with once you get used to it, but depending on your needs, you might be happier with soft synths)
-You don't want to deal with analog gear(tuning, drift, warming up, burning in. Things that you get used to but will likely cause annoyance at first)

Edit: After a while, I put the NEUTRON into eurorack and used cv:s for the pitch. I noticed that the tracking was off in a way that made osc1 sharp and os2 flat. There is however trims for tracking on the pcb. Trimming the tracking on the two oscillators was one of the most tedious things I've ever done, but achieved tracking that would only vary 2-3 cents on 5 octaves(which is way better that the tracking on my Arturia Microbrute for what it's worth).

A fun and good sounding synth, good value for the money
Jussi P 11.07.2019
This is a fully analogue synth that I use stand-alone as well as together with my Eurorack modules. The fun part - as well as the difficult part - of this synth is that it has no presets.
The sounds on the Neutron generally feels a little raw or harsh, therefore it is a good idea to output the audio via some external reverb unit.
My only problem is with the texts on the patch bay. The text is rather small and often abbreviated. Hopefully I will soon get more familiar with the layout of the patch points, but in dark light it can be difficult to read the text.

There are better options out there

Buying this to get access to the patchbay and the workflow from that is not a bad idea. Especially if you're weighing getting into modular. For any other use, I would recommend something else.
The sound is nothing special, but it isn't unlikeable either. The overdrive sounds quite crap, but the delay is useful and works fine.
Quite a few knobs on mine at least (LFO-shape and OSC-shape in particular) tend to be quite "out" in terms of accuracy. Considering the otherwise hefty build, this was a little surprising.
The synth isn't particularly expensive, so one cannot be too harsh on it all things considered.
