Bluebox Octaver

A truly extraordinary effect by MXR. Basically, the "Blue Box" is a kind of octaver, but there is already the MXR Bass Octave. The Blue Box is more for people who prefer something special or anything else: the guitar signal is first distorted and then lowered by 2 octaves. The balance between the dry and the effect signal can now be adjusted. With a discreetly used effect more typical octaver sounds are possible, especially if one plays rather high notes on the guitar; The higher the effect percentage increases, the more natural it sounds. Try it out!

  • Robust metal casing
  • Slip resistant rubber pad
  • Adds a two octave lower signal to the original signal

A weird classic, of acquired taste
The_True_Meller 23.04.2020
Oh, man... what can I say? This is one of these super niche classics that may have limited use, but when you find the use, oh boy. It tells a lot that the likes of Jimmy Page and King Buzzo have had these on their effect chain, and it's safe to say neither of these gentlemen can be described as conventional or subtle players.

This is one sick little noisebox, having both gnarly fuzz and an analog 2 octaves down effect on all the time. You have the level control (having unity gain only when about full clockwise) and the blend control that dictates the balance between octave and fuzz effect: full counter-clockwise you get pretty much only the octave effect, full clockwise there's only the fuzz effect. Simple as that, surficially...

The octave effect is pretty insane even in analog octave standards. Two down, with a guitar pedal, always on... let this just sink in. It's super glitchy sounding, getting you straight into 8-bit Nintendo territory and changing your guitar into a synth bass when fully implemented. Mixed in with the fuzz it gives you very fat tone, aggressive and out there with any one string riff or lead. The fuzz side is also pretty gnarly, giving you classic and singing silicon fuzz with pretty heavy gating, shortening the sustain significantly.

For a two-knob wonder which pretty much has one knob that totally changes the nature of the pedal, your options are limited on a superficial screening. However, it is more versatile than you'd think. Then again, getting this as your foundation pedal pretty much throws you into Jack White territory and that's it. As a spicer-up and with a bit of creativity and curious testing... wow. You may find some surprisingly tones and uses out from it, as I did. As an example, I threw this in the board with a Boss LS-2 Line Selector and with it was able to blend it in my main signal, and the resulting mix of gains was phenomenal.

Blue Box is a pedal I find pretty hard to straight up recommend to anyone, but I also strongly encourage everyone to get it and experiment around if you ever have a chance. It's a sort of curio, but can also be a great spice for your sound.

Hyvä mutta yksipuolinen
Kim M. 10.09.2013

MXR M-103 - Blue Box
Oliver W. 214 10.09.2013
MXR M - 103 Blue Box is a quite interesting pedal. Unfortunately I haven't really found any use for it. It's a really easy to use pedal with only two knobs. Unfortunately the features aren't that great. There is just a blend knob and a volume knob, which means there is just one knob to control the octave effect and the fuzz/distortion effect. The sound is pretty good, but you can't get a clean or a cleaner sound together with the octave effect. Whenever you use the octave effect the sound is very distorted and it's quite hard to actually separate different notes, because of the heavy distortion and fuzz, additionally you can't hear any chords unless you turn the blend knob up, which means you don't actually use the octave effect. So if you turn the blend knob up then you won't hear any of the octave effect and if you turn it down then you only get a very weird, dirty and muddy octave sound. If you turn the blend knob to the middle you will get a mixture of the fuzz/distortion and octave effect but it's still very dirty and muddy. It works quite well though as a dirty fuzz pedal when you have the blend turned up. Unfortunately this pedal didn't meet my expectations.

The intersection between bitcrusher and octave fuzz!
Brian95 07.03.2021
This pedal goes between pure octave fuzz and a glitchy bitcrusher that is brilliant for creating unique lead sounds. The pedal is monophonic so dont expect it to track chords but for lead lines it can make some beautifully glitchy and unique sounds!
