Yanagisawa B-WO1 Baritone Sax

Choosing the sax: I have always liked the Yanagisawa sound and knew I wanted one for my bari (I have a Yanagisawa alto and a Selmer tenor). For anyone who isn't quite sure which one of the series to get (and also to check out other ones), sax.co.uk has a nice video testing the BW series here: : I got this over the Christmas period not expecting it to be processed before the new year with all the holidays, but the great Thomann team processed it on Christmas eve and made my day :) Delivery was one day delayed, but well shown in the tracking and providing clear information at all times. The new day actually suited better anyways. It also has to be stated that the delivery man from Nightline (who does UPS in Ireland), just drove off when I arrived and he came back after the next delivery so that I could receive my parcel!

Packaging & features: The packaging was very good and double-packed. Styrofoam gave additional support. There was cork pieces in all important places that can be tricky to get out if you don't have slim fingers. I managed fine and I think a pair of tweezers would otherwise help. It comes with a basic Yanagisawa 5 mouthpiece, cork grease, a simple cleaning cloth, a simple harness and the amazingly designed bag/box. It has a very nice and professional design, there is space for sheet music etx in the front pouch and it even has backpack-straps that can be hidden under zippers or taken out and attached to the side. I personally will use these, but carrying it upstairs like that I already noticed that should not be done too regularly as it is quite heavy (sax at ca. 6kg and bag at ca. 10kg). The instrument has space for a marching lyre. If marching I would recommend getting a better harness for back support as the one included is very simple.
I think it would have done no harm here to include some swabs considering the price, but considering the design of the bag and included features, I still gave 5 stars.

Sound: I purchased some Vandoren V16 (2 1/2 works fine for me), a swab for the corpus (e.g. Gewa Swab Baritone Saxophone) and a smaller swab for the rest (e.g. BG A31 Swab S-Bow), and off I went trying it out. I usually play in a concert orchestra and a few smaller ensembles and the Yanagisawa sound is fantastic. It came to no surprise that the bari of this series sounds amazing. It responds very well in all registers and playing piano in the low register in no difficulty with this one. But of course it it also possible to get a well rounded, rich sound out of it. The mechanics and keys are easy going and relatively quiet.

Overall, great service from Thomann and a well designed instrument that is easily playable in all dynamics and registers. Just get your reeds and cleaning gear and off you go :)

Das Yanagisawa B-WO1 ist das Nachfolgemodell des B-901.
Ich benutze es in der Orchestermusik (sinfonisches Blasorchester mit Repertoire von Op bis Pop) und beim Spiel in kleinen Ensembles.

Das Yanagisawa B-WO1 spricht ausgezeichnet an. Alle Töne sind sofort da. Auch bei leiser Dynamik lassen sich die tiefen Töne problemlos anspielen, was besonders angenehm beim Ensemblespiel von Quartett bis Blasorchester ist.
Nach dem Thomann TBS-150 als meinem Einsteigerinstrument, bei dem das tiefe Cis immer ein Glücksspiel war und die tiefen Töne im Piano/Pianissimo schwerer anzuspielen waren, ist das Yanagisawa B-WO1 eine Wohltat. Das ist Barisax-Sound mit Leichtigkeit bei jeder Dynamik. Natürlich lässt sich auf dem Instrument auch ein satter, tragender Sound leicht erzeugen.

Das Instrument wiegt 6 kg und ist hochwertig verarbeitet. Die Mechanik ist leichtgängig. Die Palmkeys sind nicht verstellbar, das ist gut, weil es für weniger Mechanikgeräusche sorgt. Eine Vorrichtung zum Einführen einer Marschgabel ist vorhanden.

Ein Yanagisawa 5 Mundstück liegt bei, das einen vollen, direkten Ton macht. Wer nicht auf Blattschrauben aus Metall steht, müsste sich eine andere Ligatur, z.B. die zum Yanagisawa-Mundstück passende GF-13M GD, zulegen. Von der Klarinette kommend, bevorzuge ich allerdings Mundstücke mit kleinerer Kammer wie das Otto Link 6* (hierfür braucht man aber dann die GF-10L GD Ligatur).
Blätter liegen nicht bei, müssen auf jeden Fall zusätzlich besorgt werden, sonst kann man das Instrument nach dem Auspacken nicht sofort anspielen. Gut funktionieren bei mir Vandoren 2,5 oder Vandoren Java 2,5.

Die Transportsicherung der Klappen durch Kork ist so sorgfältig gemacht, dass sich einer der Korkkeile für die Sicherung der Klappen der rechten Hand nicht einfach händisch entfernen ließ. Hier musste ich die Beinblende abschrauben um an den Korkkeil zu gelangen, was aber kein Problem war.

Der Koffer wiegt 10 kg ohne Instrument und ist hochwertig. Er hat die Maße 115 x 39 x 27 cm und lässt sich auf zwei weichen Rollen transportieren. Nach Abklappen der Rückwand durch zwei Reißverschlüsse kommen zwei Gurte zum Vorschein, mithilfe derer sich der Koffer auch wie ein Rucksack tragen lässt. Er ist mit den zwei beiliegenden Schlüsseln abschließbar. Innen ist ein großes Zusatzfach, in dem sich Wischer, Tücher, Blätter etc. verstauen lassen. Drei dünne Bohrungen für Stifte, Schraubenzieher etc. sind ebenfalls vorhanden.

Es liegen Korkfett, ein Poliertuch und ein Nackengurt bei. Der Nackengurt ist zwar etwas dicker als herkömmliche Nylongurte, wer aber nach zwei Stunden keine Striemen im Nacken haben möchte, sollte angesichts des Gewichts des Instruments und der nicht vorhandenen Vorrichtung für einen Standdorn lieber in einen gepolsterten Nackengurt investieren, z.B. mit Naturkautschuk, wie den Cebulla Strap für Saxofon.

Einen Stern Abzug gibt es bei den Features, da keine Wischer beiliegen. Angesichts des Preises für das Instrument hätte der Hersteller dieses kleine Feature ruhig beilegen können. So sind dann zusätzlich ein Wischer für den Korpus (z.B. Gewa Swab für Baritonsaxofon) und einer für S-Bogen und Mundstück (z.B. BG A31) erforderlich.

Zusammengefasst ein sehr gut verarbeitetes Instrument, mit dem jeder Ton bei jeder Dynamik leicht anspielbar ist. Blätter und Wischer dazu bestellt und schon ist man die super klingende Basis eines jeden Ensembles.
