Wow. Wow. Wow.

I ordered these and they arrived to my address in the UK very promptly.

Thomann were very competitive and I have come to find them nothing short of miracle workers when it to customer service - not that you'll need it! Every dealing I've had with Thomann has been faultless.

Anyway, the pick ups...

I ordered these, amongst other upgrades, to slot in to my Squire P Bass Custom. Please be aware, this started life as a passive bass and these are active electronics. Some issues have to be over come to allow for such an upgrade, such as easy battery access. As such, these didn't slot straight in, but that in no way reflects on the product. If you were fitting to a bass that already has a similar arrangement, I imagine that you'd be able to it with minimal fuss.

I had to make some modifications to the body. The stock pick ups that these babies were replacing were slightly thinner, so the pick up recesses had to be fettled a little to accept the new pick ups. For the battery access, I cut the pick guard in a couple of straight lines, using the split pick up as a guide. One line straight down, the other towards the neck, so the pick guard is now a two piece pick guard. Under the now removable part of the pick guard, I routed a recess for the battery. The battery can them be replaced by removing a few screws. Not ideal, but a pretty simple solution to real problem without having to fit a battery cover.

After some fettling, fitting the pick ups was a doddle. The no solder system is really easy and connectors are good quality.

As for the sound, I don't think I've played anything better. It seems that just about any sound you desire. The range is outrageous. The EQ goes from deep, deep down to high and mighty with ease. The active citcuit requires no grounding to the bass hardware, so there is absolutely no hum.

In surmise, this product is peerless. I'm a very happy boy.

Waited a while for these to come back in stock, and I was right on it when they did.
Dude.
Fantastic.
The P half were a little smaller than my Tanglewood Rebel's milling, so I did have to create a new hole for the screws. And sure, EMG wiring is not flexible and the Pots are not the most welcoming into your cavity. And yeah, there is ABSOLUTELY no space for a 9V battery on top of this comfortably in the existing space. Yet this is purely my bass
But yeah.
It's worth putting up for that. Solderless makes a difference too. But that sound, it carries beautifully. Capturing those lows, and sweet highs. Ranging from metal to SLAP, it does well for it all. I don't think I could really be happier.

Great Sound

I replaced my stock Yamaha pickups (passive) with the PJX's. What a difference in the sound! Simply amazing.
I can now play with even amplification on all strings and the sound can be fine tuned with the controls delivering anything from smooth bass to funky slap in an easy way.
I would also like to mention that the quality of all the materials used is of the highest standards.
Highly recommended.
Having said that, I still strongly recommend for anyone considering buying pickups to try to listen to the pickups before buying.

EMG PJX Set - Great Tone
Anonymous 28.03.2016
I fitted this as an upgrade (along with an EMG BTS System) to my Epiphone EBM-4 bass. The original setup utilised passive pickups with active electronics. The pre-amp board went on the original, so I decided to overhaul.

Instant new bass, I'm really happy with the results. The sound quality is far superior compared to the original setup.

I opted for an 18v power configuration, this required a little soldering. Well worth opting for the higher voltage supply as it ensures a really strong signal.

Pros:
Quick Connect system makes installation really easy
Very clear instructions
The bass is absolutely silent, no more hiss or hum.

Cons:
Pickup sponge/cushion not provided - simply took it off the old pickups.

Advise:
Cable routing is largely pre-defined, as the quick connections dictate the direction and orientation of the cabling. This can be mitigated by proper homework and preparation. Check the dimensions of your existing pickups with the dimensions in the instructions. Check the location and positions of cabling routing holes from the pickups into the control cavity, so that cables don't get pinched.

Verdict:
I'm very pleased with my purchase. It arrived on time and allowed for a hassle-free installation. A quality product, would highly recommend this.

Easy Upgrade
Anonymous 12.07.2014
Upgraded the pickups in my Squier VM Jaguar SS bass. The stock pickups sounded OK, however I was getting some noise when recording via my audio interface. With the EMGs, the bass is now totally noiseless, and the squier sounds like a much more expensive bass.

Everything needed to fit the pickups was included and the hardware is top quality. I'm powering them from a pair of 23A batteries for 24v as space is limited in the bass's control cavity.

EMG PJ-X Bass Pickup Set.
Anonymous 12.07.2014
I bought these to upgrade the pickups in a Peavey Zodiac BXP that I acquired very cheaply and the solderless wiring provided is easy to put together, meaning that you are up and running quickly. I'd only read unfavourable reviews about EMGs, with some claiming they sound 'sterile', but I needed to experience them first- hand. The X series have a different voicing to the standard PJ set and apparently have a more 'organic' sound to them. The first thing that impressed me was how absolutely silent they were - you could record with these (as I did) with zero issues with hiss or other noise. Putting them through their paces, the split-P pickup gave a suitably throaty sound but more modern sounding, when compared to a passive split-p. I found the J pickup to be lacking in output in comparison to the P, which is often a problem with PJ pickup sets - it sounds great and cuts through very well, but I was expecting a bit more output, even when experimenting with pickup height. However, with the P and J running together, it all made sense - a sound that has enough bottom end but without being boomy but enough high-end to cut through. They are an acquired taste (I like them) for those used to passive pickups, but well worth seeing what they can do for your bass.
