9. The thing about transporting your cab....

Of course, your choice of the right cabinet(s) for you should be based first and foremost on sound aspects. In other words: a box that is perfect in its own terms but whose sound you don't like will not make you happy at all! Still, the thing about "lugging around" your cabinets should not be underestimated. Before deciding on a cabinet, you should therefore definitely consider these points:

  • Will I be transporting my cabinets by myself or will I have help? And if I will indeed have helpers: can I really count on them every time I need them?
  • How large is my car, how much space does it offer? After all, there are also the head, the instrument(s) and other equipment as well as my suitcase or bag to be considered.
  • Does a single cabinet make sense for me, or would I be better off with several stackable ones? Keep in mind that you may be able to keep your various cabinets in different places (rehearsal studio, home, etc.) and transport them only when absolutely necessary.
  • My dream cabinet is a bit on the hefty side, and bulky to boot. Does it at least have castors? Are they, as they ideally should be, removable?
  • Some foldable handles have corners and edges that make them become uncomfortable to carry very quickly. Are the handles on my "dream cab" sturdy and comfortable? (Recessed handles in the "Marshall style" have proven to be both convenient and comfortable!)

Weighing in at 75 kg, this classic Ampeg 8x10 cabinet is a true statement piece. However, it does at least feature castors and a sturdy grip for transport.
