USB-C audio interface

The Presonus Studio 1824c is a USB-C audio interface with an integrated DSP processor that is compatible with Windows 7 and above or macOS from version 10.11 onwards and can process up to 18 input and 20 output signals with a sample rate of up to 192kHz. The two XLR/jack combo sockets on the front of the interface can be used to connect not only microphones and keyboards but also stringed instruments with high-impedance outputs such as electric guitars and electric basses. The front panel additionally houses two headphone outputs, each of which is equipped with a dedicated volume control. The interface's professional-level features are rounded out by a further six mic/line inputs, a monitoring output, ADAT and MIDI I/O interfaces, and eight line outputs. To allow users to get started right away, the scope of delivery includes a power supply, two USB cables, and the StudioOne Artist software.

Plug-and-play at its finest

The Presonus Studio 1824c is connected to the user's computer via the USB interface and can then record up to 18 channels simultaneously. The monitoring volume can be adjusted using the main rotary control on the interface's front panel, and the ten large LED meters provide a useful visual display of the gain levels for the eight mic inputs and the stereo mix. Instead of the eight line inputs on the rear of the Studio 1824c being regulated by a gain control, their signal is sent directly to the AD converter - bypassing the microphone preamp - in order to prevent any colouration of the sound, and the UC Surface software, which is compatible with Mac and Windows operating systems as well as both iOS and Android end devices, allows the interface to be controlled remotely.

An 18-channel studio

The term "studio" in the Presonus Studio 1824c's name does a lot more than simply describe its appearance: Its 18 available inputs and 20 outputs are enough to allow the user to record a whole band - either in the studio or live on stage. The Studio 1824c can thus form the core of a high-performance recording or home studio, and it packs the necessary number of channels into a compact format while still delivering 24-bit conversion and sampling rates of up to 192kHz. Worthy of note is also the fact that this interface features eight of the same excellent-sounding XMAX-L microphone preamps as Presonus uses in its high-end digital consoles, and since the eight line outputs are DC-coupled, control voltage can be supplied to external analogue equipment, which makes this an interesting proposal for musicians using modular synthesizers.

About Presonus

Presonus is a US company founded in 1995 by Jim Odom and Brian Smith in Baton Rouge, Lousiana. The firm designs hardware and software at both professional and more affordable levels for musicians and producers. Presonus first made a splash in the mid-1990s with the DCP8, an eight-channel analogue compressor/limiter/gate with fader and mute automation that could be digitally controlled by MIDI. In the early 2000s followed a series of microphone amplifiers and the first audio interfaces for the then-emerging home studio scene. Today, the company's product range includes audio interfaces, microphone preamps, digital mixing consoles, and studio monitors as well as the established DAW software Studio One.

A powerful creative tool

The Presonus Studio 1824c gives demanding music producers a powerful tool with everything they need to record even drums with high sound quality. Should additional channels be needed, extra inputs can be integrated via the ADAT interface, which then makes band productions possible with multiple monitor mixes. The results can then be enhanced with virtual instruments and effects in the Studio One Artist software, right through to the final master. What is more, the Presonus Studio 1824c's ability to create different stereo mixes also makes it an interesting proposition for DJs working with larger setups, who can use the main output to run a PA system and cue their tracks via the line output.

Quality Build
KMickP 19.11.2020
I upgraded to the 1824C, having used a basic Presonus audio interface for 5 years, as my skills around Studio One have increased and my requirements are increasing as my knowledge improves. I use the interface in my home studio to produce radio/cd quality music and the fact that it used the same DAW & software and the fact that unlike a lot of the rackmount products, did not bust the bank!
The first impression is that 1824c is a quality product, solidly built and with great basic features. I don’t need 8 inputs as I generally record in stereo, so only use 2 at a time but, the others are there if required in future to record more instruments at the same time. Right out of the box it slotted into my rack & was up and running immediately as I have a Presonus user account so log in, register the product & you are all set!
The only advice I would give is that when you upgrade from Studio One, finish current projects/songs before upgrading as even though it is “compatible”, there are issues which will have you tearing your hair out! Presonus Studio is not exactly intuitive but you figure it out and even though there are copious online manuals, learning by doing will be the route most will take!
So great product but be prepared for some messing around at the outset, mainly due to software/ system issues!

Thanks to the Thomann guys who cleared up a couple of questions I had prior to placing the order, which arrived in a couple of days, so great service as usual.

MK
Audio drift is unnaceptable for work with video
Mattias Krantz 03.11.2021
I bought this product to record a virtual instrument. I wanted to start using it for my Youtube videos but I realised that everything I recorded got out of synch with my camera, even after 3 minutes. Compared to my Focusrite were the drift is barely noticable at 30 minutes. After 20 hours of problem solving and anxiety, matching sample rates, trying different computers. You know all that stuff. I came to the conclussion that it's the internal clock of the interface.

So I sent it back to Thomann which said it was nothing wrong with it. However I doubt the technician opened up a Da vinci resolve and recorded a video to test the drift... I got it sent back and then decided to give it a new chans. However every 5 recording I made gave me 5 minutes of added time to fix the audio drift. repeat that 100 times and you could have used that time of labor to buy a Focusrite which i have no issues with.

I contacted Presonous directly and showed them the bad drift. They said it was within their standards. Which leads me to the conclussion: Presonous standards most be exceptionally low. I'm actually here to order a Focusrite instead and try to forget that I spent 600 USD on this device which I'll have to put aside. It's a shame they couldn't at least take it back.

P
Perfect audio interface for a small studio
PolyTrigger 02.04.2021
I have been searching for a professional audio interface with a decent amount of line inputs (since I have a lot of hardware synths) and a trustworthy upgrade for my Steinberg UR-44.
After the necessary research I ended up with the Presonus because the specifications were attractive and it did the job "on paper".
I opted for a USB 3.0 interface. There was some doubt on going for the Quantum 48/48 range but that is (way) more expensive and to be honest: after using the Studio 1824c for a while now, it does its job perfectly.

The provided software is easy to configure (channel routing).
Build quality is excellent, this is professional equipment!

Low-latency "promise" is excellent. I haven't got a beast of a computer but once you get it set up right, the interface works like a charm.

I would highly recommend it over other interfaces because it is a modern looking interface, has excellent build quality and does what is says it does.

Good and reliable
Aovi 26.09.2022
Purchased this as an upgrade from a Studio 68c, to add more inputs. I have been using Presonus interfaces for about a decade now, starting with my original Audiobox 44VSL. All have worked well and provide pretty low latency and ease of use.
