This is the first DI box I've been using.
I use 81/85 EMG's on guitar and also an active pickup on bass. The last one has an extremely high output, that no audio interface could handle (from those which I've been using: Avid FastTrack C400 and Focusrite Forte). The JDI handles both in excellent way. There is no any overload or distortion, just saturating when signal comes to it's highest levels. It all sound in a very musical way comparing to direct instrument input on audio interfaces.
I also tried the JDI before Axe FX II input and the bass sounded significantly better this way while the guitar sounded better without it.
The build quality seems to be very good.
'Ground' button is a very useful feature. It helps to cut off the noise while using tube amplifier and other devices like audio interface simultaneously.
I had not opportunity to compere the JDI with other DI boxes but nevertheless I'm very happy with it.

Superb Passive DI
bass_jam 02.08.2017
I use the Radial JDI for recording bass and as DI on gigs.

Most of my basses are active some with a very high output which matches well with a passive DI. I have used other DI's from pedal board preamps and bass amps before but the Radial is definitely a step up and sounds less compressed. The signal has a very good dynamic range, not much colouring going on, a very low noise floor, it needs no powering and the Radial built like a tank.

A
Good sound, inadequate merge function
Anonymous 03.05.2016
This would normally take 5 stars but one thing i wasn't too happy with was the merge function.I merge two acoustic guitars and when i set the output (preamp gain) of one guitar all the way down, then the second guitar's signal gets attenuated to a great degree. Pressing and depressing the button hardly gives any deference to this. Together with the JDI i purchased a palmer pan 01 pro which has exactly the same (input and thru = mix) function.... and works much better ON THAT function (not totally as a DI box).

Apart from that, sound is clear and totally transparent.

Solid and awesome
Frednugent 29.05.2019
I didn't know I needed this until I bought it. Now I'm runnign through it on almost all my tracks. Radial is a solid company from Canada making some of the most useful gear out there. This JDI is a classic. It's passive, so no power needed, it's built to last years, the sound it produces is warm and smooth, and the features on it are super useful. I just ran it from the output of my pedal board to the guitar amp and it sounds better with it in the chain then without. Also great for recording. Just tried a drum machine through it directly into DAW. Sounds great. I like this DI.

Very good!
nicknorah 01.02.2020
I used it for a Roland fa08 keyboard as well as for a Moog SubPhatty in both live gig and studio recording and I must say it's flawless. Easy to use, just plug the cables in/out of the little green box and expect top sound quality. Good build, hard metal case, nice feel on the buttons. I own the bigger brother of this box too, the stereo one. Recommend it for any of you looking for a top quality DI.

True bass tone
Anonymous 08.10.2014
I think everything is been said about Radial JDI. I'm just very happy to have it, beacuse it's reliable, tone is as it should be...and in my opinion it is a bit thicker and transparent.
My signal chain is G&L L2K (p mode) -> Palmer Ubertreiber -> MXR M 81 -> Radial JDI -> PA nad I always get compliments about tone of the bass and how it sits in the mix from soundmen and audience.

S
Highest quality DI box
Scytta 06.07.2019
Used with a fretless bass, this DI box combines flawless sound with excellent functionality. You can read the spec., yourselves, but I highlight the ability to have a feed to an onstage amp / monitor as well as the DI (Mic level) output to the desk - useful for smaller setups where you just need foldback of your own instrument and have no need for a desk mix for your monitor. Great build quality. Great sound. Very acceptable to the sound engineers ...

Excellent

I took this one to try it with acoustic guitars with piezo pickups in order to compare it with active DI-Boxes and the result is very nice, well balanced, slightly warmer sound. Active or passive Radial DI-Box with acoustic guitars is a matter of taste at the end but this one worked very well, especially with nylon string guitar. It is pricey but I don't regret it.

Well worth the money!
Ben1363 28.11.2014
I wouldn't be without this incredibly useful little box. Built like a tank, very transparent sound when used as intended. There is nothing to dislike. If I lost it, I'd replace it in a flash.

It also works well as a conventional DI placed before the amplifier, However, I normally use this in a slightly strange way. I plug the line output of my preamp into the guitar input which drives the tranformer much harder than my weedy passive pickups alone manage. This gets a great recorded sound with a little added "something"

The other feature it has is a *merge* function. This allows the input and the bypass sockets to both be used as inputs. I think it's meant for keyboards and things, however we use it slightly differently. My band shares a rehearsal room with another band. Sometimes we have a jam session with all the musicians who use the room. We plug both bass amps into the DI using the merge function and send the output to one of the inputs on the recording interface. That way whoever is playing the bass gets recorded on the same channel. That way we can both play our own rigs as we please, and both appear on the recording without having to swap cables about.

Incredibly useful, if you don't have one yet, buy one!
