First Place in the Ibanez/Maxon shootout
Mombasaflash 09.10.2021
I decided to revisit the 'Screamers' and taking full advantage of Thomann's unrivalled 30 return policy ordered every Ibanez and Maxon Tube Screamer for a side-by-side comparison, including the Ibanez TS808HW — the Hand-Wired, Full Bypass Holy Grail that arrives in a bomb-proof metal Museum Display Case.

Long story short ... this unassuming OD808 was the winner. The Ibanez TS Mini was last place and the fancy, ridiculous expensive TS808HW was somewhere in the unremarkable middle.

Even though this modestly proportioned and rather plain box commits the apparently cardinal sin of not having a full-bypass switch, the sound is just sweeter and warmer than all the others. When originally constructing my pedal board, I went to great lengths to maintain an unbuffered signal path because I did not like the super-metallic brightness that buffered pedals introduced. Particularly bad with Overdrive pedals.

It turned out that the reason for the super-bright brittleness was the worn out ten year old valves in my Bad Cat Cub! It all disappeared with new valves.

So, putting this buffered Maxon OD808 into the signal path has made no difference whatsoever that I can detect. It is on a switchable send & return of a One Control Looper, so it is very simple to switch it completely out of the signal path. But I hear no change of tone whatsoever when it is switched in.

A
Indespensible!
Anonymous 24.04.2016
I got one of these after hearing for years how great they are. I didn't realise just how useful they are until I spent a few hours with this one!

This is a great sounding low- to medium- gain overdrive with a usable range of sounds accessible via the tone knob. This is obvious, I think, from the myriad reviews available on this site and online. The pedal is useful in a variety of situations, from jazz and blues to extreme metal.

The build quality is impeccable. The pedal has a nice weight to it, and I predict it will still be working perfectly long after I'm gone!

However, as much as I enjoy the drive the Maxon OD-808 delivers, my favourite feature of this pedal is the way in which it compresses the low end of guitar signals. This makes this overdrive my first go-to for anything heavy rock or metal. When I'm recording bands in these genres, I ALWAYS throw this pedal in the mix to tighten up the guitar tones, as well as to drive amps as well as the best ODs I've tried in the past.

To point out a niggle I had when I first received this pedal: initially, the bypass switch caused a brief but noticeable silence before the effect kicked on. I thought I had received a dud at first, but after a week of use this sorted itself out and the pedal worked a charm!

This has become an important element in my work since I got it. I heartily recommend this pedal to everyone with a jack lead.

Maxon OD808 Overdrive - THE OVERDRIVE
NiandraLaDes 12.05.2014
Let's face it: there are like one million clones out there of the famous Ibanez Tube Screamer. Made by Maxon in the 80s and now really rare and expensive. But can the OD808 as good as his old companion from the 80s? Let's check this out!

First of all, this pedal is build like a tank. And it looks pretty cool. I needed something to kick my Marshalls butts and this little baby does it pretty sweet.

Three controls - Drive, Tone and Balance - control the amount of gain, the highs and the level of the effect. It doesn't feature a true bypass switching (check out the Maxon OD-9 if you need one) but I personally think this whole TB discussion is way overrated. A buffer at the beginning of your chain is a great way to keep your signal fresh and full of highs.

Like I said before, the OD808 was bought to bring these chunky metal tones out of my DSL Marshalls. I tested it in front of my home amp (Marshall DSL 401) and on stage (Marshall DSL 100) - damn the OD808 rocks! The knobs control do something on every millimeter of their range - didn't have a TS clone like that under my feet before! I turn the Drive down to minimum, Tone around 3 o'clock and Balance nearly at maximum: that's exactly what I searched!

A nice chunky boost who cuts the bad, bad bass frequencies and turns my Gibson SGs into real metal machines! Of course you can have some nice texas blues sounds with drive turned up in front of a clean amp but I prefer the nice mid-boost and cut through the mix. Also on stage - what a sound!

If you play metal (it doesn't matter what genre) - don't waste time to find the perfect Tube Screamer - here is it: the Maxon OD808 Overdrive.

Suits my Marshall DSL
G&Lbai 01.12.2021
I play through a home rig with a Marshall DSL 5 watt and a few pedals. When I'm on the clean channel, using this pedal gives me a more classic Stevie Ray -esque driven tone. When I'm on the gain channel I use the pedal with the drive turned down and it just tightens up the sound nicely and fills it out better when Im playing at lower volumes. I would almost describe it as a more compressed tight tone. But in conclusion it works great on both channels and gets a lot of use + true bypass when not in use so no complaints here!

Classic tube screamer
Morgains 04.04.2021
Fantastic classic tube screamer circuit in a well built platform. I have owned this pedal for many years and it has treated me extremly well, it has been my primary boost for this period of time and I have used this primarily into my 6505+ head and engl e530 preamp which works fantastic for classic and early 2000's metal. I wouldn't recommend this for modern metal as much however, cranking the tone control up to 3oclock will definitely get into the modern metal realm, however, doing so, provides a noticeable amount of added saturation and a loss of detail and clarity from the amp as a result, which is even more obvious when using anything that is solid state, rather than tube. In this scenario, there are other pedals that do a better job for this application such as any based on the TC integrated preamp circuit which is more of a genuine "clean boost"

A Sledgehammer to the Front of my Amp.
Ross M 10.06.2020
I bought this pedal to go in front of my Orange Dark Terror and tighten up the low end. It did this perfectly, it also gave an entirely new level of gain to the beast that is the Dark Terror. I've been using it as a boost mostly but also for a sort of 80s rock tone and it works brilliantly. Sturdy construction and a great tone, I have nothing negative to say about this brute.
Highly recommended!

What can I say — it's the classic
Press K 02.06.2023
I'll be honest, this sound has been copied to perfection over the years. You can definitely get the same results for cheaper.

But this here is built excellent, it has the classic design, and it's just a pleasure to own, use, and behold.

Opinion based on: I also own the green Behringer overdrive for a good 10 years now. It's falling apart, and its pots and switch were never great. But the circuit sounds the same.

C
Tone machine
ChrisR 14.03.2017
To begin with, I play Orange amps (chiefly a Dual Terror) so that is the basis for my review. I have tried a lot of overdrives and a couple of other ODs/boosters have made the cut in the studio as a contrast to the OD808, but this one is my absolute go-to.

The main thing I use it for is to have the amp on a heavy crunch (gain around two thirds to three quarters) and add the pedal into the front to push and tighten the sound - gain at 9 o'clock, level right up and tone between 1 and 2 o'clock. Obviously it's great going into a clean amp for more bluesy sounds, but there are plenty of other reviews covering that. Used the way I use it, the OD808 gives a fabulously gritty, smooth, and very musical overdrive by pushing the amp; the Dual Terror is a very bright-sounding amp by nature, so it's important to not set the tone too high, but it's awesome through darker sounding amps like the Dark Terror to get those snarly mid-range tones to come through and make the sound punchier and less muddy.

Build-wise it's all good, not amazingly heavy but definitely robust and reliable. Something went wrong with my original one this year (2022), but the awesome folks at Thomann simply sent me a replacement (first-class customer service as always). I couldn't find anything online about the problem I was encountering, so I guess it was just a freak occurrence and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if I needed it.

In practical terms, an important fact is that this little green box of WIN not only sounds great in the studio, but you can hear yourself really well on stage and in a band context with it as well.

It won't be giving up its place on my pedalboard any time soon :-)

D
Standard pedal for Metal and not only!
David5140 10.10.2014
If, like me, you play Metal and you especially play on down-tuned guitars or 7/8/9 string guitars and your tone is too muddy, this pedal is the solution.

This pedal is the classic pedal that has nowadays become a standard, just like the Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808. In fact, Maxon was the original manufacturer of the TS808 until Ibanez started to produce these pedals themselves.
So it is virtually identical to the TS808 but the price is lower!

There is practically no effect on the tone. It does not add more bass or more treble or mids. What it does is gently cut the ultra-lows and the ultra-highs to give a focused, tight sound. No mud or harshness.

The construction is super; It's made from metal, not plastic, and also comes with a free battery.

Also present is a tone knob to adjust for your own taste. I leave mine in the middle position.

The 'secret' to using this more as an eq pedal than an overdrive, thus using your tube amp for the gain, is to set the level knob to max and the drive knob to minimum. This gives you the eq part of the pedal and leaves the gain for your tube amp.

Very happy with this pedal although it doesn't overdrive my amp as much as other pedals, so I have to turn up the gain all the way on my amp. But it's no big problem. Overall, excellent pedal and very good price.

Ji
In love with this pedal
JK ismyname 08.01.2018
I was in the market for an od pedal and literally considered every pedal up to 200e. I went for the one than reminds me the sound of the classic tube screamer the most.
A lot of feedback on this one, the reviews were convincing enough and gave it a try.
I was amazed!
-perfect build quality
-good sound quality
-ranges from boost to overdriven sound
-works well with both fender and marshall tube amps

For me this is a proper tubescreamer and will always be on my pedalboard.
