Astonishingly good bass,especially for the price!
I needed a better bass,but had only a small amout of budget I could spend on it.So I bought this,and I was amazed how good it is! Both in terms of how well made it is, and it has an awesome sound. It has almost no noise, since I use it mostly in the humbucker mode. Even though it hasn't got an active pickup system in it, like "real" stingrays, but it still sounds very good to my ears, it's very full sounding and has a lot of sustain, it only needs little compression and eq when it is plugged into the audio interface directly, and the gain is sufficient at around 11-12-right at the middle. So I have no complaints so far. It has a tone knob,to make is sound more muffled, rolling off the highs, and it is useful, but most of the time it sounds totally satisfying when it is all the way up(not used at all-cause it sounds very good naturally,as it is). I am very happy and glad,that I've chosen this. It's perfect if you like fender style bass, but don't want to buy a jazzbass or percision style one, and want to make it sure,that it picks up the least amount of noise possible. Tuners are decent too, holding the tuning pretty well, which is not always the case- with probably even more expensive basses from other manufacturers,-if not at a similar price-range. Awesome sound
Can a 120$ passive bass reproduce the sound of 2000$ active bass? Almost!
The first thing I played after getting this bass was RATM and it fits extremely well. Having played a Stingray clone before, this was a really pleasant surprise. This bass will get you 90% of the sound, for 10% the money.
I have two small gripes:
- The headstock and the color is not as pleasing as a real Stingray. Even though the finish is perfect and there is not a single blemish, something still feels amiss compared to the 2000$ inspiration.
- The string height on my bass is pretty high - I much prefer a high setup to a noisy, buzzy setup - but a beginner may find a high setup harder to play.
Overall, there is no better bargain if you want an MM style bass - get one, but make sure you have a few dollars for a setup if you can't DIY.
