Perfect mic for acoustic

I bought these mikes mainly for use on solo acoustic guitar. They are extremely sensitive and have absolutely no self-noise. They have cardioid pattern and with some work on positioning you'll get great results, but if you record in the room with poor sound isolation, they'll still pick up ambient noises in the background (like street noise through windows, or rain pouring), it's very low, but audible in recordings of soft and slow solo pieces played in high volume, so think about some room threatment if you recording at home.
Pros: The sound is clean and transparent. Slight high-end lift adds nice airiness, which is trademark of KM184. If you're looking for clean, crisp and bright sound - these are for you. Even through cheap interface the sound is crystal clean, but you'd want to plug these mikes into something more expensive for more warmth and detail.
Cons: none, but make sure that every piece of equipment in your chain (instrument, preamps, room) is on the same level of quality, so you'll get maximum results.
They come in the pretty wooden box which is packaged in another cardboard box. Stand joints are a bit stiff and can leave scratches.

Expensive but seem to be worth it

I bought these with the intention of recording my first studio album. I used them both through an Apollo twin and the sound was very good. I'm not sure exactly how much better they are than other mics, as they are very expensive. The reason I bought them was because I was recording some bits in another studio and the engineer there recommended for instrumental recordings. I recorded pipes, violin, accordion and flute through these mics, all sound great (except maybe for the flute - may have been better through condenser)

ausgewogen und ehrlich

Ich mache jetzt seit über 15 Jahren Musik und nehme in erster Linie akustische Instrumente auf. Dazu gehören: Gitarre, Klavier, Percussion und Blasinstrumente.

Als ich zum ersten Mal die Neumann Mikrofone ausprobierte war ich zunächst ein wenig enttäuscht. Der Unterschied zu günstigeren Fabrikaten war in meinen Ohren zunächst nicht so groß. Doch dann änderte sich während der nächsten Aufnahmen meine Meinung ziemlich schnell.

Der Vorteil bei diesen Mikrofonen liegt eindeutig darin, dass sie auch wirklich das abbilden was man hört. Das heißt natürlich auch, dass die Klangquelle und der Raum sehr gut sein müssen!! Weiterhin sollte man die Off-Axis Verfärbung nicht vernachlässigen, die bei diesen Mikrofonen so gut wie gar nicht vorhanden ist. Daraus resultiert ein Mikrofon, welches sehr unproblematisch einzusetzen ist und immer einen ehrlichen Klang liefert. Zudem klingt es einfach rund und sehr angenehm in den Höhen. Diesen Unterschied hört man deutlich im Mix, wo andere Hersteller durch übertriebene Höhen einen sehr scharfen und auch künstlichen Klang zeichnen.

Mein Fazit:
Wer sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat Aufnahmen zu machen, die wirklich professionell klingen sollen, wird wohl kaum die Investition für ein Paar Neumann KM184 umgehen können. Jedoch sollte man nicht vergessen, dass zunächst die entsprechend gute Klangquelle und ein akustisch optmierter Raum vorhanden sein müssen. Ich empfehle auch das KM 184 für Gesang auszuprobieren. Mit einem vernünftigen Popkiller und einem gewissen Abstand (Kleinmembranmikrofone sind sehr pop-empfindlich!) sollte dieses Mikrofen auch locker viele Großmembranmikrofone schlagen.
