4. Replacement Pickups

Just like many car enthusiasts, guitarists love to tinker and fine tune the different models they own - visually and technically enhancing them. One of the main things changed to make a guitar more personalized are the pickups. By using different combinations and wiring set-ups you can create a sound all your own. To meet this demand there are various manufacturers who offer an incredible range of 'aftermarket' pickups.

Important tips for making the right choice

Some pickups on the market are specifically aimed at those whose guitars are equipped as standard with single coil pickups but who want to install a powerful and low-noise humbucker. Normally this would be an issue since the pickup cutouts in the body must be enlarged. Additionally if the humbuckers need to be mounted in the original pick-guard, it too must be cut to fit.

But theres an easier way!

  • There are now so-called reverse wound reversed polarity pickups (RWRP) offered by almost all pickup manufactures. They were developed specifically for use in the middle position of guitars with a triple single coil set-up. The coils of RWRP pick-ups are wound, as you might imagine, the other way around and the magnets used are polarized the other way around from those on standard pickups. If you combine them with 'normal' single coils in the bridge or neck position, then you get the humbucker effect - marked by reduced noise and increased power. And the best part: When used alone a RWRP pickup behaves like an ordinary single coil.

  • The second most common method of providing a single coil guitar with the benefits of a humbucker is to stack two humbucker coils one on top of the other. This simple trick succeeds in keeping the format of a normal single coil pickup - despite presence of a second coil. These 'stacked' variants provide the same sound as normal humbuckers but fit into the single-coil spaces without the need for body work.

By the way: Although this type is mostly used to create full-fledged humbucker sounds, there are also stacked pickups which deliver vintage single coil sounds. And thanks to their humbucker base, they do so without any humming noises. What more could you want!

  • The next option for a humbucker in single coil format is one with parallel mini-coils. They have the same dimensions as a normal single coil making them really easy to switch out.

Waarvoor gebruikt men een F-Spaced Pickup?

F-Spaced pickups zijn speciaal ontworpen voor gebruik in gitaren met Floyd Rose tremolo's. De afstand tussen de poolstukken is iets ruimer dan bij normale pickups, zodat een perfect geluid van de afzonderlijke snaren gegarandeerd is. Afhankelijk van de fabrikant wordt dit type ook wel Trembucker genoemd.

Waarvoor gebruikt men RWRP Pickups?

Reversed Wound/Reversed Polarity pickups zijn single-coil pickups die speciaal zijn ontworpen voor gebruik in de middenpositie van gitaren met een typische 3-single-coil-configuratie. De spoelen van RWRP-pickups zijn andersom gewikkeld en de gebruikte magneten zijn andersom gepolariseerd dan bij standaard pickups gebruikelijk is, zodat ze kunnen worden aangesloten op normaal gewikkelde enkele spoelen in de brug- en nekpositie en er zo dus een typisch humbucking effect optreedt.

Hoe stel ik vast of een element uit fase geschakeld is?

Twee pickups die in fase zijn aangesloten via een schakelaar klinken normaal - dat wil zeggen vet en compact. Humbuckers die uit fase zijn aangesloten, klinken daarentegen dun en nasaal. Dit komt omdat in deze modus veel bas en middentonen worden opgeslokt.

Om het effect te verklaren wordt vaak een voorbeeld uit de luidsprekerwereld gebruikt: Als een geluid gelijktijdig wordt verzonden via twee luidsprekers die in fase werken, is het geleverde geluid vet en luid. Dingen zien er anders uit als ze gefaseerd zijn! Het membraan van de ene luidspreker beweegt naar voren, de andere naar achteren. Het resultaat: het geluid wordt dun en stil.

Wat is het bijzondere aan een midi-element?

Om analoge data (bijvoorbeeld het tokkelen van de gitaar) naar een zogenaamde converter (of interface) te sturen, is een MIDI-pickup nodig, die deze data vervolgens omzet in MIDI-data. Met behulp van MIDI-data kan een synthesizer elk denkbaar geluid creëren. Conclusie: je hebt dan de mogelijkheid om geluidsbronnen zoals keyboards met een gitaar te bespelen.

Mijn geluid klinkt in de uit fase schakeling nogal vlak

In simpele termen werken twee met elkaar verbonden pickup-spoelen niet 'samen', maar tegen elkaar. Dit leidt tot frequentie-annuleringen, wat uiteindelijk leidt tot het typische uit fase geluid (dun en raspend).

Mijn buizenversterker wil het geluid niet goed vervormen - waaraan kan dat liggen?

Om versterkers met lage vervorming meer kracht en vervorming te geven, kan het installeren van High-Distortion pickups helpen. Deze pickups bieden een bijzonder hoog uitgangsvermogen.

Ik zoek een humbucker die er optisch precies zo uitziet als een normale Single Coil - is dat mogelijk?

Ja, er bestaat zoiets - en de onderdelen worden "gestapelde" pickups genoemd. Bij gestapelde humbuckers zijn de spoelen niet zoals gebruikelijk naast elkaar geplaatst, maar op elkaar gestapeld. Op deze manier wordt het formaat van een single-coil pick-up bereikt.

Bei sommige gitaren worden actieve pickups genoemd. Zijn niet alle pickups actief?

Nee. De meeste pickups zijn passief. Met een actieve pickup zorgt een in de gitaar geïntegreerde voorversterker voor een ruisvrije werking en een signaal met lage impedantie dat zorgt voor een verliesvrije overdracht - ongeacht de lengte van het signaalpad/kabellengte.

Dit zijn DiMarzio pickups met een minder sterk magnetisch veld. Resultaat - Iets minder output, maar meer duurzaamheid en dynamiek.
