Zoom H4n Pro Black

Ongetwijfeld een veelzijdige recorder, maar de simpele voorziening om met automatisch geluidsniveau op te nemen is miserabel slecht!
Dit aan de Engelstalige medewerker zo uitgelegd:
I set in Input setting: Level auto ON.
When I push the REC button once, I see the auto rec level, using the internal mics.
In my silent roomwith a ticking clock I see level 90 on the display. When I make some noise, the level sinks to 30, when I blow gently over the mics the level is 5. BUT: The level now stays on 5, when the silence returns!
Indeed, playing back the recording, the clock isn't heard in this last part of recording."
Thomann heeft me, weliswaar zonder verdere uitleg, vlot een vervangend exemplaar opgestuurd, maar dat had dezelfde klacht, en kon bovendien niet uitgezet worden met de On/Off-knop....
Netjes mijn geld teruggekregen, maar Zoom is NIET mijn merk.

Nu 2 dagen mee geoefend, met name de instellingen voor opname via de 3 modussen. De kanalen zijn goed apart in te regelen. Bij een hoger opnameniveau begint de ruis (noise floor) zich te manifesteren. Bij lagere instellingen heb je hiervan geen of minder last. Als ik trompet inspeel kan dat op niveau 30 of lager met externe microfoon heel goed en heb je geen bijgeluiden. Idem voor zang. Dan wel goede micro met plop-scherm gebruiken. Als je dicht op de ingebouwde micros spreekt komt de plop, hou je wat afstand dan valt het mee.. Ik heb met samson q6 en q7 geprobeerd en dat ging prima. Gitaar of keyboard kun je inpluggen op de recorder en dan speelt noise floor geen enkele rol. Maar ook als je je gitaaramp met live micro opneemt is dit goed in te regelen. Bij de ingebouwde micro’s dus wel rekening mee houden, bijvoorbeeld als je de natuur in gaat of opname op straat maakt zal een beter apparaat met nog betere pre amps of professionele richtmicrofoon nodig zijn om ruis zoveel mogelijk te onderdrukken. Je hebt dan nl eerder behoefte aan een hoger opnamelevel vermoed ik (afstand tot de bron).
Er zijn veel keuzemogelijkheden in het menu, die heb je met een paar uur oefenen onder de knie, alle begin is even wennen. Ik vind het lastig dat je zelf geen mapnamen (folders) kunt aanmaken. Filenamen kun je wel aanpassen. Korte projectnamen voor multichannel recording (MTR, je gebruikt dan alle kanalen gelijktijdig, bijv voor repetitieopname van een bandje) kun je ook zelf wijzigen. Bij openen in de verkenner op je computer zie je wel de projectnummers maar niet de namen die je hebt toegekend. Erg onhandig als je veel Op je device bewaart zoals ik zelf doe..... Ook jammer dat tijdens het afspelen op het display niet is te zien hoe lang een track duurt en waar je tijdens afspelen in de opname bent. Dit was op mijn tascam DR 07 wel veel gebruiksvriendelijker. Zit me een beetje dwars omdat ik het ook ga gebruiken voor bandopnames, en een nummer duurt dan in de regel tenminste enkele minuten.
Ik heb het alternatief, de Tascam 40x laten lopen vanwege slechtere reviews over de noisefloor. Maar bij een goede afstelling van het opname level was dat misschien een betere keuze geweest vanwege de hierboven beschreven ongemakken, althans voor het doel waarvoor ik het gebruik, bandopnamen. ( Ik weet enkel niet of de Tasam mogelijkheid heeft om de kanalen apart in te regelen en dat is een pluspunt van deze Zoom). In elk geval als je er muziekinstrumenten of zang mee opneemt, dan heb je nl geen hoge recording levels nodig, via je DAW maak je toch uiteindelijk je eindbeeld.
De interface lijkt zijn werk goed te doen, hier ga ik nog meer mee oefenen.
Zorg dat je batterijen bij de hand hebt, rechargebles zijn heel nuttig.
Ik gebruik sd card van 2 en 4 GB, dat is ruim voldoende voor een uur of twee opnamen met WAV, het inladen gaat dan vrij snel. Met Cards van 16 of 32 GB moet je langer wachten tot gebruiksklaar. Als je mp3 opneemt kun je met 4 GB al uren kwijt .....

Bought this for field recordings (rain, storms, seashores etc) and also band rehearsals. Chose the H4 over the cheaper H1 as from the Youtube tests it sounded like the larger mics had the edge in terms recording quality. Also, the two extra mic inputs should be really useful when it comes to band rehearsals and, I'm hoping, to record a drum kit using the on-board mics as overheads and separate mics for the kick and snare.

Tested at a rocky beach on a calm day. The mics are astonishingly sensitive - picked up conversations of passing walkers from 20 meters away as though they were next to me. Not that I was snooping ;) but its almost like aural binoculars.

With the mics set at 90 degrees (can be twisted to 120 degrees for wider field) it gave great stereo imaging and a sense of space, albeit with an occasionally strange telescoping effect of far away things sounding near.

Really impressive sound results in terms of just how much detail, clarity, dynamic range and frequency range there is. Low bass, crisp lower-mids, smooth upper-mids and highs. For want of a better term, what you hear with your ears when recording is more or less what you get on this Zoom. That said, I think it'll take a lot of practice to get the field recordings I'm looking for.

Upon advice of a seasoned Zoom-user friend of mine, I used a pair of earbuds to monitor any wind noise as this can ruin a recording, but I found that on a fairly still day there was extremely low noise and, with the record level set at 80% there was no clipping - although it wasn't a loud environment. I made sure to test this as far away from any roads as possible, not easy as I live in a city where traffic noise is everywhere.

As I haven't yet bought a dedicated wind sock I used instead a pair of spongy pop filters that came with a pair of Behringer overhead mics (useless on their own when tested against a fan), and a child's mitten tucked over the mics. When used together that gave, I'd say, around 75% protection against wind noise without a noticeable drop in response. Not a scientific test, obviously, but good enough for me.

There are a ton of other features on this that I doubt I'll ever use, such as four-track recording and (apparently, but I can't find it) a guitar amp-sim.

Two downsides so far: I haven't yet worked out how to connect this to my 2011 iMac via USB. Bit frustrating as theres no readily available information as to why - maybe the iMac is too old? Plus the Zoom formats the SD card with it's own proprietary format, so not a case of simply pulling the SD car out and sticking it into the iMac. Will try it with a PC instead.

Also, the case itself feels slippery - hence one star less for 'Handling'. Some product descriptions mentioned a 'rubberised' case but it isn't at all. When mounted on a stand this won't be an issue, but generally you have to hold the Zoom rather gingerly when recording to avoid handling noise, so the risk of dropping the thing and smashing those protruding, fragile-looking mics was a constant worry. Maybe I should make some kind of shock-mounted gimbal?

One last thing - it comes with batteries (that don't look like they'll last long) but no SD card. An SD card is vital to operation, so bare this in mind when ordering.

I'm a hobbyist musician/producer using this great device for field recordings (ambience, nature, industrial sounds) and quickly record some musical ideas with my acoustic guitar or just have fun and record own foley samples, hit some things in the kitchen with drum sticks to create a "kitchen drum kit" :)

The preamps are surprisingly clear and quiet, I tried them with external condenser microphones - Rode NT2000 large diaphragm and T.Bone EM 9900 shotgun - both worked great for their own purposes.

Overall it's an awesome recorder packed with tons of features. The only minor issue is its strange finish which looks like a painting process gone bad.
