M
Historical Les Paul Black Beauty from Gibson
Marek333 06.01.2024
After few years of collecting guitars, I have decided to buy the most expesive electric guitar in my life. I have sold two other Gibsons to buy this one, and needed to add more money.
Is the Gibson LP Custom worth the price? Yes. I can tell like this: Gibson LP Standard is worth the double price of Gibson LP Studio. And the Gibson LP Custom is worth double price of Gibson LP Standard.
Finally I have found a guitar which can fight with my PRS Custom 22 USA core model. But there is more in Gibson LP Custom. Naturally it has great low and of course mid frequences, but there is another thing: high frequencies are the greatest: sharp, cripsy and with long sustain. This guitar is not muddy at all. Sound (especially distortion) is sharp (in good way) and punchy. Sustain of this guitar is incredible, fretwork is flawless, very comfy neck (a little thinner than new LP Standard 50s), high end parts (Grover tuners are incredible).
The visual of this beauty is awesome, iconic head of the neck, beautiful ebony fretboard with mother of pearl inlays, gold hardware, multiply binding – this is really big thing.
Any cons? Yes, there is some quality control issues like binding (was scrapped too deep but in hunderts of mm), and even I have found a permanently fingerprint on the body nitro laquer – Im intrested which worker of Gibson has left his signature.
One word about 490R (neck) and 498T (bridge) pickups – For my playing (hard rock/metal) it is good or the best set for me. And they sound different (much better) than in LP Standard.
Overall – If You think to buy this beauty this is the time. If You have some problems with attention to details (I was, but im still fighting with this nightmare) maybe You need to consider buy another guitar.
If You need very good sounding guitar and a workhorse – this is good choice. For me the Gibson LP Custom is keeper and this guitar will be getting old with me.

A Rolls Royce in a guitar world

What can be said about these guitars that haven’t been said already? It’s a premium quality guitar and you can feel it the moment you open the case. Does it sound better than some of the $1k-$2k guitars from other manufacturers? Sometimes not. But the iconic les paul sound, exceptional looks and feel make this guitar worth every penny. I’d say, if you’re on the budget - spend money somewhere else. If you can afford it and you are a guitar enthusiast- go for it. It’s that simple! I have an Epi les paul custom too and there is a visible difference in quality of build and overall presence. But you can still upgrade a cheap guitar and make it sound even better and still spend less money. So this is up to the individual.

Very nice guitar, but...
Firebird V 06.12.2021
I have always wanted Les Paul Custom and now I decided pull the trigger and order one. Very fast delivery from Thomann through UPS Express delivery.
Stunning looks of guitar when I open the case first time.
Quality some what was as expected, flawless nitro lacquer finish, just only one thing that some parts of binding was scraped too deep, I know its hand made process and varies based on person who does the bind scraping.
Playability and feel is spot on, one of the best that I have ever felt from Les Pauls that I have played. Gladly the neck was not too thin, some where between 50´s and 60´s C profile, maybe a bit more shoulder would make it feel better for my taste.
Action was also very nicely setup in factory, only I would go a bit heavier string gage for my taste.
But then we come to reasons why I finally decided to send this beauty back to Thomann.
I finally came to a conclusion that it is way too over priced to what it really is and here is the reasons.
First, the pickups, why on earth Gibson uses this price range guitars the cheapest pickups (490R (neck) and 498T (bridge) ) that they have in their Les Paul line. You have to pay way too much more to get Gibson custombuckers on Les Paul Custom. So this means to buy Les Paul Custom Reissue 57 Balck Beauty to get custombuckers.
490R (neck) and 498T (bridge) pickups are very basic sounding pickups in my taste. Kinda too average sounding. I have played several custom shop Les Pauls with Custombuckers and those should be by default choice of pickup on this price range Gibson guitars.
Second thing, the case that the guitar was delivered was also surprisingly not any more made in Canada, it was made in Costa Rica! Very small detail, but still made me wonder if this guitar is actually this much value.
So eventually all these findings and feel of guitar made me decide to send it back, hard decision, but if I pay this much money on guitar I need that it fulfills all the expectations.

What to say, LP Custom with Ebony (finally!!) fingerboard after years, on some Gibson forums I found some negative responds for qualitty check, but mine was superior fine, fretwork is done properly and almost feels like its done with PLEK machine

Great fat and juicy sound as you expects from LP Custom

Real deal and great year to take one!!
