Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 HH FR Dark Amber

First of all, I've been playing guitar for quite some time, but apart from my first guitar and a Les Paul Studio , I didn't get my hands on any other guitar, especially one with a Floyd - this is the first new one I actually bought since I've started this journey

I've bought it during covid times, so I was a bit worried since I couldn't try it or at least get my hands on something similar...

Even so, the guitar turned out to be splendid. Of course, a set up was needed, new strings, action, setting up the Floyd for the first time, etc.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find a single design/construction flaw. The finish is way better that it is in pictures, the maple neck & board are really comfortable(slightly thinner than a les paul but not skinny thin), and for those who are worried, after setting the Floyd correctly, it would not go out of tune no matter how hard I played with the bar. It is quite heavy, but that's because of the mahogany body, but even so it is well balanced.

One thing I really love about it, is the shredders cutaway. The reach is effortless, all the way up to the 24th. You'd think that it's close to a neck-through. Comparing it to a les paul or even a traditional strat block attachment, this feels like butter. That is a really nice though out feature of this guitar

Now coming down to the sound - I go through a THR 10v2. What I have to say about the pickups, is that to me at least, they seem to be a bit dull, even sterile somehow. They are not bad by any means, but they don't seem to excel in any particular area, especially the neck on distorted sounds. It seems to be quite low output, even though it is raised as high as it would go. I would like to switch them for something hotter as I go along the way. Other than that, the switch feels great, the pots as well. It also has a no-load tone

As a conclusion, this is a really great instrument from Charvel's catalogue. The only thing missing would be ss frets, but that might be a lot to ask at this price point

Note that if this is your only guitar(as it currently is in my case) , you might want to think twice before getting it, because the Floyd can be a bit annoying to set up, and you might not want to spend the effort to set it every time you want to change the strings/tunning. Other than that, I can say that Charvel has done a great job with this instrument

The guitar plays and feels great and boasts some cool features like a Floyd Rose and SD pickups.
I had to sent my first one back due to a loose input jack.
My second one did not have that problem, though the jack on it also becomes loose now.
Also there is a crack in the finish at the heel and a big black dust particle under the translucent finish at the top horn, looks ugly and is totally unjustifiable at this price point.

Vorab, meine erhaltene Gitarre hat div. kleinere Verarbeitungsmängel, die in der Summe nicht unerheblich sind. Einige habe ich beheben können, die Anderen müssen leider bleiben.

Leider wurde bei Charvel am falschen Ende gespart. So sind die Bundstäbchen an den Enden im Griffbrett nicht gekürzt und versenkt, sondern einfach mit übergeschliffen worden. Sieht billig aus, ist es auch. Keine andere meiner 12 Gitarren von div. Herstellern weisen diesen Mangel auf.

Die Deckel der Fachabdeckungen auf der Rückseite, sind aus Kunststoff und nicht wie bei Carvel üblich aus gebürsteten Alu. Auch haben diese keine Abschirmfolie. In den Fächern wurde keine Abschirmfarbe verwendet. Von daher machen die Pickups nicht unerhebliche Brummgeräusche.

Das Volume-Poti ist sehr leichtgängig, die Achse wackelt und der Schleifer macht beim Verstellen, Geräusche. Das Poti muss getauscht werden.

Diverse Schrauben wurden schief eingedreht.

Es ist eine mittelmäßig verarbeitete Gitarre aus der Mexico-Fertigung. Wer jedoch ein gut verarbeitetes Instrument erwartet, Fehlanzeige.
Wenn man etwas sucht, findet man zu einem erheblich geringeren Preis Gitarren, die eine erheblich bessere Verarbeitung haben.

Von der Gitarre bin ich etwas enteuscht. Bei den vielen positiven Bewertungen habe ich mir mehr versprochen.

Besitze und spiele die Gitarre seit 5 Monaten, somit Fazit:

Erster Eindruck vom Instrument ist Bombe. Der Body ist sehr schön, auffällig, und sorgt für ein tolles Lichtspiel, sowie "Farbtiefe". Der Mahagoni-Korpus ist etwas dicker, wie ich es von üblichen superstrats kenne. Die Form ist mithilfe der Bellycuts und Shaping perfekt für das Spielen im Sitzen und Stehen geeignet. Die Gitarre ist perfekt ausbalanciert und leidet nicht (bzw ich leide nicht) am Neckdive, obwohl das Instrument 24 Bünde hat.

Der Hals ist der Highlight dieser Gitarre. er sitzt perfekt in der Hand, die Ecken sind rund, die Bünde groß und schön poliert. Es ist eine Art Satin Finish auf dem Hals, weswegen die Hand hervorragend die Bewegungen ausführen kann, ohne, dass sie klebenbleibt oder zusätzliche Reibung verursacht wird. Man merkt wirklich, dass Charvel einen ernorm großen Wert auf die Verarbeitung und Präzision gelegt hat.

Aus dem o.g. Grund ist es sehr befriedigend, diese Gitarre zu spielen. Sie ist sehr einladend, benutzerfreundlich, und man muss nicht "gegen sie kämpfen". Ganz im Gegenteil: die Formulierung "Speed Neck" habe ich erst verstanden, wo ich sie zum ersten Mal gespielt habe. Man hat einen deutlich präsenten Drang, die passagen (v.A. Solis) schneller zu spielen.

Es ist vorteilhaft, die Truss-Rod Verstellung leicht zugänglich zu haben, ohne sämtliche Deckel aufmachen zu müssen.

Die Potis sind top, fühlen sich hochwertig und sehr geschmeidig an. Nichts relevantes im Grunde, aber sehr schön zu haben.

5-Wege PU-Schalter erlaubt schnelle und einfache Auswahl an zahlreichen Sounds, die diese Gitarre bieten kann.

Da kommen wir schon zum Thema Sound, Holz, Elektrik und Tonabnehmer. Ich hab von dem ganzen Zeug keine Ahnung. Was aber klar ist: Die Gitarre klingt böse, solide und sehr ernstzunehmend. Coilsplitting vorhanden. Egal mit welcher PU-Konfiguration, Poti-Stellung, usw, ist das eine Gitarre, eines sich respektierenden Musikers.

Zum Floyd Rose gibts nicht viel zu sagen. Bleibt gestimmt. Sieht gut aus. Falls die Charvel deine erste Gitarre mit FR werden sollte, empfehle ich im voraus schon mal ein Paar Videos auf YouTube über die Funktion, Seitenwechsel, usw anzuschauen. Am Anfand ist es ungewohnt und komisch, aber wenn man den Dreh raushat, hat man im Grunde keine Probleme.

Die Gurtpins sind hier etwas größer. Da ich Straplocks benutze, habe ich sie gewechselt.

Fazit:
Ich würde sie kaufen, auch wenn sie das Doppelte kosten würde. Unglaublich feines Instrument, das mit Herz gemacht worden ist, und den Besitzer zum Spielen motiviert. Absolute Kaufempfehlung.
