I wish someone would've written it the way I'm going to do it now!
Stay awhile and listen. This violin is amazing because for that price you get to actually play the violin, which is pretty much fantastic because of the price tag.
I've never played the violin before. I had no idea how to set it up or how to even tune it. I play the guitar so I figured that it wouldn't be that hard.
First of all, before you order this, make sure to understand the fact that it is a student quality violin and that means that although it's awesome for the price, it has its setbacks. But bear with me because I think it is worth it.
Buy good rosin and another set of cheap strings along with this violin, you will thank me later.
When you open the case you're greeted with a moderate boy, not too good not too bad. A cheap rosin (Don't use it). A shoulder rest (Which does the job pretty well) and two wipers to clean and cover your violin when not in use. They also include a very handy oil to clean the wood of the violin which I really found to be a nice thing.
Now to the serious matters. The pegs are what you expect from a student violin. Thomann already had the violin set up for me so I just had to tune it (I will save you a couple of hours, keep on reading). The pegs keep slipping by you see, which means that you can't tune the thing. The trick here is to push the pegs back in every time you tune it up a notch, just take care when you do it and think ahead.
I would recommend this for a starter. I put 3 stars on everything because I don't know about violins and just got started. Yes it is worth it.
Some helpers:
Download a tuner app (Found them better than real tuners) then open a youtube video with the real notes of the violin being played and see if they match up with the tuner, if they do then you are good to go and the tuner is working on your mobile.
The SLIGHTEST notch will raise the pitch of the strings of the violin, I never thought it would be this sensitive but it is. Tune every string a halfstep down then use the small tuners at the tail to fine tune it. Keep plucking the strings to see them on the tuner. If the pegs slip, again just push them back in perpendicularly. I didn't even break a string.
