Yamaha YDS-120 Digital Saxophone

Buscaba un modo de ensayar saxo pero sin molestar a los vecinos, y me decidí por el YDS 120 de Yamaha, pues la marca era garantía de calidad.

Empiezo por los pros: el volumen del aparato es bajo, pero está bien y es bastante realista (con un cable jack 3,5 - 6.5 se puede conectar a un ampli, así que no es problema el bajo volumen). Funciona a pilas o por cable usb (tipo B) conectado a cargador USB, de manera que no hace falta cambiar de pilas cada dos días. Presenta una gama de sonidos muy amplia, sobre la base de alto, soprano y tenor. Puedes tocar con auriculares, sin que te escuche nadie y, además, puedes conectar en la entrada auxiliar un backtrack para tocar encima. Y tiene una serie de funciones como sensibilidad de las llaves, sensibilidad al soplar, etc bastante útiles. En definitiva, si lo que quieres es un instrumento para ensayar sin que tus vecinos o familia te tiren, pues muy bien. Además, al no pesar nada, puedes hacer largas sesiones sin dolor de cuello o espalda. El aparato puede conectarse a una aplicación de móvil con la que puedes hacer más regulaciones de funciones, pero yo aún no la he probado (no tiene bluetooth, de manera que hay que conectar por cable).

En los contras: lo primero es la boquilla, es una boquilla de flauta, que nadie espere una boquilla con caña; el instrumento funciona, básicamente, con el aire que soplas, como una flauta. Igual eso, a la larga, te perjudica a la hora de formar embocadura con el saxo real (habrá que verlo). Y un segundo problema, al menos en mi caso, es que algunas veces se vuelve un poco loco y toca una nota incorrecta (se engancha en una nota); me sucede sobre todo con la llave del re. Basta con tocar otras notas y se suele arreglar, pero claro,.... Es un defecto que tengo que comprobar si se repite con frecuencia o no, así que haré una nueva review más adelante.

A la fabricación le he dado solo tres puntos porque el YDS 120 es de plástico y me temo que cualquier caída o golpe fuerte hará que te quedes sin instrumento. La verdad es que con ese precio se podía esperar algo más robusto.

En definitiva, una buena opción para el propósito de este instrumento (ensayar sin molestar, llevárselo de viaje,...) pero tal vez un poco cara, de momento. Supongo que el precio irá bajando y saldrán alternativas más económicas.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago and at first I was pretty happy with it. I pretty quickly got comfortable with how to access the various voices and features and started practicing my fingering. Up until now I had been using just the built-in speaker then I put headphones on. What a disappointment! I became aware of a distinct noise problem on most of the voice settings, like a poor quality tape recording with rumbles and clicks. I tried various volume settings but couldn't get rid of the noise. When I reported the problem to Thomann they asked me to change some of the key sensitivity settings but the problem persisted. Thomann agreed to replace the unit.

I've just received the replacement and I have the exact same issue with this one. I'm debating with myself whether to look for a refund or just stick it in a cupboard and try to forget about it.

Basically this is an expensive toy. It is of no use to anyone wanting to do anything other than practice their fingering. It certainly couldn't be used for recording purposes.

I'm giving it low marks for sound for obvious reasons. The low mark for quality is because, having received 2 units so far with the same issue, I can only conclude that there is a quality control problem at the manufacturing stage.

Great for practising finger work on a sax, and also for just having fun. Its lightweight, Slightly difficult getting used to playing with 3 cables connected to it. I connected it to my phone and headphones to use with iReal and it's perfect. My only complaint is there is no case or bag to keep it in and no stand you can purchase, seems a pity that Yamaha think just laying it flat on a table collecting dust when not being used is ok. I expected a case to be part of the deal but not so. No spare O rings , USB cable or batteries included in the box. Despite my complaints I like it a lot. I wasn't too happy with the packaging of everything I ordered. Reeds and mouth pieces left loose in the box. Would have been better to wrap these items in some bubble wrap bag and nestle in between items, not on the top of the box all loose. I had ordered an alto and soprano and the Yamaha yds120. All came in one box via international shipping with no padding between saxophones boxes and cardboard shipping box. Should have been a bigger box with all 3 saxophones sitting inside a padded shell. No damage despite the flimsy packaging, but one sharp dig on the outer box would have definitely done major damage to one of the saxes.

Versand war top, die Bestellung war zwei Tagwe später da. Beim Auspacken war ich erst etwas enttäuscht über die leichte Bauweise und wollte das yds120 gleich zurückschicken. Zum Glück, hab ich es aber doch noch ausprobiert und bin dann sehr positiv überrascht worden und ich habe bemerkt, dass das Spielen auf diesem digitalen Saxofon etliche Vorteile hat:
Für mich am wichtigsten ist, dass ich Tag und Nacht üben kann, ohne die Nachbarn zu stören. Der eingebaute Lautsprecher ist recht leise und verstummt sogar ganz, sobald man Kopfhörer anschließt (es reicht auch schon, einen kleinen Klinkenstecker in die Buchse zu stecken).
Beim Üben ist mir klar geworden, dass ich das yds120 ob seiner leichten Verarbeitung in Plastik "behutsam" spielen sollte. Das hatte direkt Auswirkungen auf mein Spiel mit meinem akkustischen Alt-Saxofon, weil diese "behutsam" Spielen in der Übersetzung auf das herkömmliche Instrument bedeutet, dass man mehr auf die Kraft in den Fingern achtet und so Verkrampfungen vermieden werden können und es letztendlich zu einem flüssigeren Spiel kommt.
Ausserdem reagiert das yds120 auf die Tasten (Klappen) bei leisester Berührung und so werden unsaubere Fingerbewegungen deutlich hörbar. Zuerst hat mich das genervt, aber dann habe ich erkannt, dass durch das Üben auf dem yds120 auch auf dem analogen Sax die Finger besser koordiniert werden!
Alle Tasten (Klappen) funktionieren wie auf einem üblichen Saxofon. Das Geübte kann 1:1 übertragen werden.
Beim Blockflötenmundstück hatte ich Bedenken, habe da aber auch gesehen, dass man den Luftstrom (Anschlag) wie beim analogen Sax mit der Zunge kontrollieren kann, deshalb können auch rhythmische Stücke problemlos gespielt werden. Das Ansprechen auf den Atemdruck kann man auch einstellen und sich diesbezüglich seiner normalen Spielweise annähern. Soweit zu den Vorteilen beim Üben.
Die eingebauten Sounds interessieren mich nicht besonders, weil ich normalerweise mit den sounds aus meiner DAW spiele. Toll ist, dass man u.a. auf Baritonsaxsound wechseln kann, Dann spielt man wie auf einem analogen Sax gewohnt, klingt aber cool bassig. Umstellen auf Tenor- und Sopransax und andere Sounds geht auch, ist für mich aber nicht so wichtig. Mit der angebotenen App kann kann man auch eigene Sounds auf das Instrument übertragen, so dass sie auch ohne DAW verfügbar sind und über den eingebauten Lautsprecher klingen. Allerdings habe ich das noch nicht getestet, weil ich die App bei Yamaha noch nicht gefunden habe.
Mit einem usb A zu mikro usb Kabel kann man das Instrument in eine Midi-Umgebung einbinden oder an den Computer anschliessen. Es war fantastisch, Protools, Cubase oder Ableton erkannten das angeschlossene yds120 sofort. Das Spielen mit den virtuellen Instrumenten in den DAWs war der Hammer! Normalerweise gebe ich die Noten in der DAW mit meinem Roland Fp30 ein und bin damit zufrieden. Da das yds aber ein Blaswandler ist, gibt es hier ein ganz anderes Spielgefühl. Die eingespielten Melodien klingen total anders. Die Übergänge von Note zu Note werden viel weicher als beim Piano, man artikuliert also anders, ebenfalls eine Bereicherung.
Alles in allem bin ich froh über diesen Kauf, einzig die leichte Plastikbauweise gefällt mir nicht besonders, vielleicht hätte man da Metall einsetzen können, aber mit 3 Jahren Thoman Garantie ...
