Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Round Neck

I'm so disappointed with the Dobro. I was deliberating between this and a similar Gretsch and opted for the Dobro because I already have numerous Gretsch's and wanted to try something else. Mistake! First off, the product sent to me is not exactly as shown here. The hand rest above the sound hole is attached with screws, not one piece as in the pics. (I mentioned this to Thomann and I note it has not been corrected). Furthermore, there were screws missing so it rattled. Apparently new screws will be sent to me but they've not arrived. Regardless of this, I can see that it will never fit flush and would always annoy me. I ordered a different plate to cover the soundhole as I would prefer it to be one piece and when I removed the one fitted by the manufacturer, I was shocked - the finish is so bad. There are extra holes drilled that don't need to be there - a problem with the fitting I guess, there is loose wood where things have not been sanded down or cleaned - it's incredibly disappointing. Because of these issues I carefully inspected the whole guitar and now I can see blemishes throughout. There's a dent in the mesh grill over one sound hole and the other holes are not finished as you would hope. My best guess is that it's a badly made guitar, that was probably returned. I've bought so many things from Thomann, and this has been by far and away the worst. I should have bought the Gretsch, and I shouldn't have risked buying it online from Thomann. The wonderful, historic, Dobro brand is not in good hands right now.

Die Dobro Hound Dog ist eine sehr authentisch klingende Resonator Gitarre. Speziell mit Slide oder Bottleneck gespielt ist ihr Klang für mich fantastisch. Mittig, voller Wärme, und vor allem mt einem sehr schön singenden Ton.

Wenn man sowieso nur mit dem Slide spielen will, kann man sich bestimmt auch für die Square Neck Variante entscheiden, die wird dann normalerweise immer auf dem Schoß und mit Slide bedient.
Aufgrund ihres normalen Halses ist die Round Neck aber auch für herkömmliches Akkordgegreife geeignet. Wenn man also mal den Country Lagerfeuer Schrammler machen will, geht das recht gut.
Recht gut und nicht einwandfrei vorallem deswegen, weil mein Exemplar ein intonatorisches Problem bei Normalstimmung hat. Bis zum 4. und 5. Bund ist die Bundreinheit bei Akkorden noch einigermaßen in Ordnung, danach läßt es aber deutlich hörbar nach. In offenen Stimmungen ohne Slide ist es nicht ganz so schlimm, aber auch hier klingt es ab dem 9. Bund doch sehr nach Stimmungsbedarf. Insgesamt muss man in Standardstimmung sehr sorgfältig stimmen, und dabei auch auch mal Kompromisse eingehen. Man merkt doch, dass die Heimat dieser Gitarre dass Sliden in entsprechenden Stimmungen ist. Ich habe mir noch einen extra Sattel zum Aufsetzen auf den normalen besorgt, der lässt die Saiten höher werden und spiele am liebsten nur noch mit Slide.

Die Gitarre wirkt recht zierlich, ist aber doch recht stabil und schwer gebaut, dafür kan man aber auch bedenkenlos dicke Saiten in hohen Stimmungen draufziehen. Außerdem: diese Gitarre ist LAUT!! Der Resonator macht seinem Prinzip als mechanischer Lautsprecher alle Ehre. Ich habe noch nie eine lautere Gitarre in der Hand gehabt.

Das einzige worauf ich vollständig verzichten kann, ist der eingebaute Tonabnehmer. Der bringts garnicht. Egal, an was man ihn anschließt, Amp oder Mischpult, der Sound ist blechern, und neigt sehr schnell zu Rückkopplungen. Mit einem Mikrofon vor dem Resonator klingt es wunderbar und natürlich, den Tonabnehmersound hingegen kann man komplett "in die Tonne kloppen".
Deswegen auch keine 5 Sterne beim Sound und bei den Features, denn bezahlen muss man den Tonabnehmer leider ja auch.

Das ist aber auch das einzige wirkliche Wölkchen am Reso-Himmel. Sonst eine gigantische Reso-Gitarre, so wie es sein soll, YippieYeah!
