Digital Noise / 808 Sound Source

Module A-117 (DNG) is a combination module, including a digital noise generator and an 808 source. The digital noise generator uses random sequences of square waves, (18-band, with multiple slewed feed-back loops), whose rate can go from random clicks to pure noise. The colour of the noise is very different from the analog noise produced by the A-118. In addition to a manual setting, the rate can be control-led by an external clock - eg. VCO, LFO or MIDI clock).

The 808 Source aims to re-create the sort of multi-oscillator array that was used in Roland’s TR-808 and 606 drum machines as the basis of the sound of the hi-hat, cymbals and cowbell. The cowbell mix uses two oscillators, and the cymbals mix six.

A surprisingly versatile synth module

I got the A-117 to provide a source of digital noise to the sound palette of my modular synth rack. This module turned out to be great fun and surprisingly versatile in use. The sound quality is excellent as expected from doepfer and the build is robust. The only complaint I have is that the control knobs are quite stiff in use. This however is the style of doepfer modules. For this price, every modular synth rack should have one.

Das A-117 ist ein Modul, das vom Nutzer erforscht werden will. Vordergründig liefert es digital Noise und zwei Oscillator-Kombinationen nach TR-808 Vorbild (Cowbell & HH). Allerdings liefert es eben auch eine Random Clock, wenn man den Rate-Regler im unteren Bereich einstellt, die wierum auch extern getaktet werden kann. In Verbindung von BP-Filter und VCAs kann man so alle möglichen Klicks von trocken bis resonant (z.B. Regenprasseln) mit unregelmäßigen Intervallen erzeugen. Außerdem eignet sich die RND-Clock auch zum Triggern von Sequencer, ADSR etc. Die beiden 808-Derivate sind keine fertigen Sounds, sondern müssen erst mit Filter und ADSR/VCA geformt werden, wobei nicht zwingend Drum-Sounds entstehen können. Insgesamt trägt das A-117 sehr zur Erweiterung der klanglichen Möglichkeiten meines Systems bei.
