Genzler Magellan MG800

Bought this amplifier for rehearsal at home, for practices and for gigs. Due to covid the gigs with this unit hasn't happened yet, but I use it daily at home and have used it at practices too. Packs a lot of volume and is very clean sounding/transparent - perhaps some would find it too transparent. Sounds very good with low volumes too! The sweepable mid helps a lot, and you can also use two different adjustable contour settings for sound (low&hi boost; mid centered boost) as well as drive (very mild, more like imitation of tube warmth).
I find myself using the "drive" at half and contour low&hi setting at half with mild boost at low mids with the sweepable mid control. I also use the clean with low&hi contour and mild cut to upper mids for other purposes. Haven't used the mid centered contour that much yet, don't like the sound of it so much, perhaps because it seems to imitate sound of tweeterless cab and I use full range flat frequency cab(s). Perhaps works better with other type of cabs.
Pros:
+Easy-to-use controls
+Good set of features
+Looks great and seems like it can withstand time
+Very good clean/transparent sound
+Fan is quite silent most of the time

Cons:
-No foot pedal function for contour, only for drive
-Drive pops/crackles a bit if you switch it on/off from the amp while note is ringing, same with contour (well, some other amps/pedals have the same issue, so it's probably some circuit type of thing - haven't tried with foot pedal yet since I don't have one).
-Not sure if these are really a problem, the drive is very mild anyway

I've been using bass amps for decades and the poor old bass player has always had the heaviest and bulkiest setup in the band!

This class D (switch mode) amp is light weight, mega powerful, and looks absolutely pristine.
Oh dear! - it's got a fan! - I didn't realise before it arrived! - but it is VERY quiet - truly madly deeply honestly!
There is a simple trade off. With no fan (and I was seriously considering one) then if it overheats it has to shut down! - Silence! - in the middle of a gig! - do you really want to risk that ?
The controls are simple and straightforward - and I am used to a graphic EQ and a parametric on the same amp! However, these controls are more than adequate. With everything set at 12-o-clock (and this is a very good test) the amp sounds clean and powerful. I suppose I'd better add NOT the contour control - set this to minimum. I don't like either of the contours, but that is entirely personal preference.
What's with the 2.67 Ohm setting ? Well if you do the maths, that's 3x 8 Ohm speakers or cabinets together.
I was originally intending to use an 8 Ohm cabinet, but couldn't get the right speakers at the right impedance. No 16's with the right frequency response, no 4's in stock, or not at the power rating I really wanted.
Eventually I opted for a pair of 8 Ohm 500 Watt Eminence Kappa Pro-10A. That means I could theoretically hit them with 800 Watts into their combined 4 Ohms. All theoretically within their limits. There is more than enough EQ available with the controls on the front panel to get just about any sound and I'm not one for turning everything up to "Number eleven".
Not really given much time to the Drive channel.
The 2.67 Ohm setting on the back means that I can add one more 8 Ohm cabinet - A 15 inch LF driver! - without any instability. The sound on 2x 10 inch Eminence is perfectly ok to me, with DI to the main desk.

I use this amp for all styles of music and it is so dynamic. I you want a nice tight round bass sound, then this is the amp for you. It's very powerful, so is great for big & small venues. If you like a nice tone as well as a strong bass thump behind it, again - look no further. The drive section I don't really use all that much, it's not really there for distortion, it's seems to give you that vintage tube sound more, if you like that sort of thing. I'm really pleased with this amp, it's light, looks great and solid too.

Der Amp ist absolut TOP verarbeitet, das bin ich schon von den Genz Benz Amps her gewöhnt, die hatten auch schon höchste Fertigungsqualität.

Die Bedienung mit den 2 Kanälen, dem parametrischen EQ und vor allem dem Contourregler (mit 2 Modis) machen die Bedienung sehr flexibel, aber trotzdem einfach und übersichtlich. Mir ist es wichtig, nicht zu viele Knöpfe zu haben.
Der Overdrive Kanal ist sehr musikalisch und im (Live-)Sound mal echt zu gebrauchen.

Der Sound könnte im Grundsound vielleicht etwas mehr Bässe vertragen, weswegen ich hier 1 Stern abziehe. Aber gut, das kann man locker mit dem EQ nachregeln... und ich hatte davor nen Mesa M6 - vielleicht bin ich da etwas taub geworden :-)
