Harley Benton SC-Custom II SPAF

First of all if you consider the price and what you get with it, you get huge value for your money!

The guitar looks and feels super nice. No serious finishing flaws. Just some tiny bits of dark paint around the back cavities. Very tiny bit of roughness in the neck at one point. Otherwise esthetics and the finishing of the top are superb!! It's a very beautiful guitar.

I wasn't fond of the fretboard radius at first. It's around 14" which is flatter than LP standard. I'm really starting to like it after couple of weeks though! Also it's worth noting that neck profile is more modern. Starting to really like it also although I am more experienced with vintage neck designs. So no problem there. I wanted something more modern and got it!

It's also worth noting the instrument may need some setup and the nut may need to be cut properly for it to play comfortably. I really recommend for using setup services if you are not up to doing all that yourself. This might not be the case with all units. For me setting this up myself and having the nut cut (30€) made it a super nice guitar to play!

PROS:
- Stunning looks!
- Very comfortable ergonomics
- Fret ends nicely done
- Smooth frets didn't need much polishing
- Confortable satin neck
- beautiful jatoba fretboard (recommend oiling it lightly - this will make it even more nice and comfy)
- The grover tuners are great as usual
- The bridge seems to be very good (can't really find any difference to a Goth bridge I have in my Epi LP standard.)
- Coil split was a surprisingly nice feature. Works well with semi clean little crunchy tones. Specially neck and bridge combined in spilt mode.
- Bridge pickup seems really nice. Might replace it for experimenting, but I feel like I might end up putting it back in. Really nice clean and break up. Also high gain with boost is very usable.
- Pots seem smooth and not cheap (except for tone pot maybe)
- Makes you wan't to pick it up and play. It's a comfortable playing guitar when properly setup.

CONS:
- Unfortunately the nut was cut way too high. Had to take it to a local master luthier to lower the string cuts. Cost only 30€ and really made a HUGE difference for the action and playing comfort. Not really a biggie.
- Few frets may need a little bit of levelling. Specially some of the upper frets seem to be not so well levelled. Not a huge issue either unless you wan't a really low action. I think I will address this at some point.
- Muddy and weirdly loud neck pickup. Will swap it anyway. (Loved the bridge PUP though!!)
- Tone doesn't really do anything until the end (wrong type of pot?) but the coil split works and it feels great.

I really like this guitar a lot and I play it the more than my 6 other guitars at the moment. If you own a traditional single cut and want some variety this Is definately a great option! Definately huge value for the money.

So far my HB experiences are really good. This will definately not be my last Harley Benton.


!!! UPDATE few months later:

Had to change this to 5 stars overall. This guitar has become my favourite. I think as things have settled (wood adjusted?) the neck is super steady and refief/action stays very accurate. It has currently the lowest action of my six electric guitars and is very comfortable to play. I changed the pickups to duncan designed HB-101n + HB-103b set which I got for only 45€ second hand. It’s a korean licensed version of 59n neck and duncan distortion bridge. Owning 5 other duncan(usa) humbuckers these babies do work. The pups made a huge difference to the sound! The distortion bridge suites the Sc-custom nicely specially on hi gain. Very articulate note separation and tight powerfull low end. Not too harsh top end. This guitar is so nice i wouldn’t hesitate to swap even more expensive pickups to it. But I think this current match is just what I want anyway!

I don’t know how they manage to make these for such a low price with all these features but this thing is absolute killer! Straight out of the box, I tuned up and it was good to go. Had to raise the tail piece slightly since it was firmly against the body and the break angle meant the strings were resting on the back of the bridge, which increases the chances of string breakage. Other than that the fretwork, neck, tuners, pickups, everything was top notch. A solid piece of wood with decent weight. The tones are massive through my Fender Champion 100, you can Guns n Roses the hell out of it all day and it loves it. Would I gig with it? Hell yes I would, it looks fantastic too. Thoroughly recommended for anyone wanting an LP style guitar on a budget especially if you’re looking to play some Zakk Wilde, Slash style stuff. Killer tones, killer craftsmanship. cheers again Thomann!

Vuosikymmeniä kitaraa soittaneena, joskaan en kovin intensiivisenä kitaristina itseäni pidäkään, kiinnostuin Harley Bentoneista niiden saamien hyvien arvostelujen vuoksi. Pakko oli siis tilata kokeeksi yksi. Tämä malli oli tällä hetkellä kiinnostavin, joten tilasin sen.

Kitara tuli vajaassa viikossa. Se oli asiallisesti pakattu ja oli havaittavissa että se oli matkustanut kylmässä (nyt on talvi). Ennen muita toimenpiteitä, piti kitaran lämpötilan siis tasaantua.

Kitaran työnjälki, body, kaula ja lapa olivat kaikki erinomaista laatutyötä. Missään ei näkynyt liimajälkiä tai muita kokoonpanossa tulleita dingejä. Saumat ja liitokset olivat ensiluokkaisesti toteutettuja ja bindit siistejä. Positiivinen yllätys oli mukana tulleet hihnalukot. Groverin virittimet ovat myös hyvin toimivat ja siististi asennetut. Potikat ja kytkin toimivat hyvin. Mukana on myös kelojen puolitus, joka on mukava ominaisuus tämän hintaluokan kitarassa.

Sitten muutama moite. Nauhatyö on näissä halvemmissa kitaroissa usein se ongelma. Niin tässäkin. Nauhojen päät eivät varsinaisesti ole liian pitkät tai viimeistelemättömät, mutta nauhojen reunat saivat sormeni kipeäksi aika äkkiä. Body on myös tavallista Les Paulia ohuempi, joka aiheuttaa ainakin tällaisessa kokeneemmassa käyttäjässä sen, että kitara tuntuu jotenkin epätasapainoiselta painopisteen suhteen. Lisäksi kaulan "modern C" -profiili tuntuu jotenkin pieneltä ja kapealta isompaan kouraan. Se on huomattavasti sirompi kuin esim -60 Les Paul malli. Action oli hivenen korkea alkuun ja sitä piti laskea hieman. Intonaatio oli jo kitaraa paketista otettaessa aika hyvällä mallilla, joskin kielten lasku vaati alakielien intonaation uudelleensäädön.

Kokonaisuutena kitara on hintaansa nähden aivan tavattoman siististi rakennettu ja näyttää kauniilta. Nauhat ovat kuitenkin kulmikkaat ja vaativat hiontaa tai kaavinta. Pidän tämän kitaran ilomielin, kunhan olen työstänyt nauhat. Toki kitara on täysin soitettavissa tällaisenaankin, mutta loistava siitä tulee pienen vaivannäön jälkeen. Hintaansa nähden siis aivan mahtava soitin hänelle, jolla on mahdollisuus tehdä pientä hienosäätöä ja näin saada aivan erinomaisen hyvä kitara sopuhintaan.

Tämä oli kolmas HB:n SC custom ja laatu oli taas parasta A luokkaa. Tämä peli pesee soundissa ja soitettavuudessa monet kalliimmat single cut kitarat mennen tullen. Ainoa säätötyö jonka joutui tekemään boksista ottamisen jälkeen oli tallan hienoinen lasku ylä e kielen puolelta pari kierrosta. Tämän uusimman yksilön Roswell humppareiden soundi oli tuplasti parempi ja soivampi kuin aiempien yksilöiden. Aiemmilla kahdella SC:llä keikkailin neljä vuotta tyytyväisenä ja luottavaisin mielin ilman mitään ongelmia. Kitaran viimeistely ja yksityiskohtien detaljointi voisi olla tarkempaa mutta tähän hintaan tärkein on soitettavuus ja soundimaailma. Uusi Paradise Flame väritys on älyttömän nätti ja luo kalliimman kuvan kitarasta kuin mitä hintalapussa lukee. Otelauta olisi voinut olla öljytty, nauhat olisi voineet olla paremmin kiillotettu, satula voinut olla yhtä leveä otelaudan kanssa ym. ym. mutta nämä eivät tässä menossa haittaa kun kitara on kuitenkin unelma soittaa ja äänimaailma kohdillaan. Kaulamikistä irtoaa säröillä aivan mielettömän kermaiset sävelet ja tallahumpparista soivat ja sopivan rouheat soundit. Äänimaailma on ponnekas, sopivasti PAF mainen mutta silti pinchit ja muut ujellukset lähtevät myös maltillisella säröillä. Kaikin puolin Bueno isolla B:llä ja messevä lespa niin kotiin kuin tien päällekin 🤘
