Stentor SR1505 Viola Student II 16"

I was a bit anxious at first about buying this viola as it didn't have that many reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. The overall appearance is very clean, no mistakes in the varnish.

The sound is quite good for a 250 € viola and I believe it is good enough for someone just starting out. I had some trouble tuning it in the beginning with the tuning pegs, my teacher said the pich of one string changed when she was tuning another string using the peg. She said it might just require a lot of playing to "stabilize" it. In the beginning the viola went out of tune quite a lot as well. I have been playing with it for almost a year now and these problems are no longer an issue. It stays quite well in tune now, too.

Though after every practice session my left hand fingertips turn black for some reason. It says the fingerboard is made out of ebony (a black wood) but I've also heard that fingerboards are sometimes painted black to make the colour more intense. BUT I've also heard black fingertips can be a result for having thicker strings than say in a violin. I don't get any colour residue from just rubbing the side of the fingerboard so the strings are most likely the cause. It doesn't really bother me and it's nothing serious in my opinion.

Overall this is a good viola for a beginner and it can serve you well for the first few years of your new hobby. In addition, pay close attention to the size. This viola is a 16'' instrument, so quite big. I have long arms so it was a good fit for me. Make sure someone measures your arm lenght carefully!

Estudié muchos años violín, y en el afán de seguir perfecionando recurrí a un maestro que me desveló muchos secretos del instrumento, pero en relidad él era 1º viola de un prestigiosísimo conjunto de cuerdas, e insistía en que mis manos se adaptaban mucho mejor a la viola que al violín, decía que me enpecinaba en ser un violinista del montón cuando podía se un muy buén violista, nunca hice mucho caso a su recomendación pero siempre me quedó la idea de tener mi propia viola. No quise ponerme en gastos (no son épocas) y me decidí por ésta viola y no me arrepiento en lo más mínimo: muy buen sonido, parejo, buenos armónicos, acabados de calidad, incluso el arco tiene exelente peso y el estuche es de lo mejor. Lo recomiendo no solo para estudiante, sino para quién ya domine el instrumento, no se arrepentirán.

Un instrument qui est en soit de bonne facture (malgré qu'il soit fabriqué en chaîne !) mais qui présente cependant quelques défauts (pouvant être rattrapés). Les cordes ont premièrement trop de tension (à changer impérativement, je recommande des Thomastiks Spirocore), le chevalet était mal taillé (voir pas du tout) et l'âme, pièce fondamentale de l'alto, était elle aussi mal taillée et aurait pu faire s'effondrer l'instrument si j'avais tendu les cordes à fond pendant une certaine durée.
Au delà de ça, l'archet et la boite sont suffisant pour un débutant avec un budget (sinon il est intéressant d'investir dans un archet en carbone) mais la colophane est à changer. Etant violoniste de formation et étant désireux de découvrir l'alto (malheureusement et souvent méprisé par mes confrères violonistes), je suis tout de même satisfait de l'instrument lui même, qui produit un son tout à fait correct après changements.
En bref, intéressant pour un débutant avec un budget et pour découvrir, mais à prévoir ~250 euros de plus pour toutes les modifications nécessaires pour un jeu confortable (archet, cordes, retaille d'un chevalet et de l'âme par un luthier etc.).
