Blackstar Dept. 10 Dual Distortion

This sounds very Blackstar like, very warm (I don't know if its because of the tube or not). That being said, I'm not sure that all the gain comes from the tube.

Compared to the previous models (the HT's):
- you can use your usual power supply (this pedal is very greedy though),
- the pots seem to be way more resistant,
- you got more options for the channel selection.

There are indeed four channel, but you can only select two. Also, there is only one eq for these two channels.

Alles aus einem Gerät – Home Recording in den PC, Floorboard vor den Amp, direkt in die PA – ist mittlerweile State of the Art. Von H&K hatte ich schon den Ampman probiert und von Vox den Stamp, dann gibt es den BluAmp, Strymon Iridium und mehr. Über die vielen tollen Features muss man sich also nicht mehr wundern – wir sind zurück bei der Frage, wie es denn nun klingt für einen Preis, für den man auch ein Modeler-Effektgerät mit 100 programmierten Amps kaufen könnte.

Ich habe das Teil zuerst über den XLK-Out in mein Line6-Powercab gespielt. Auf dem D.10 kann man dafür drei Impulse Responses über einen Mini-Toggle auswählen. Erster Eindruck: riesige Bandbreite von Fender-Clean bis Oberheavy. Aber man muss/ darf eine Weile probieren, bis man seine Sounds gefunden hat, denn der ISR-Regler in Verbund mit Dreiband EQ und vier Kanälen – links Clean und Crunch, rechts zweimal Distortion – plus drei IRs, da kann man viel tweaken. Zumal reichlich Überschneidungen da sind. „Clean“ mit mehr Gain ist kerniger Overdrive. „Crunch“ mit mehr Gain ist Hardrock-Brett. D1 mit etwas weniger Gain ist ebenfalls Hardrock-Brett, mit mehr Gain dann Metal-Knüppel, und D2 kommt noch obendrauf. Und wenn man den PC verbindet, kann nicht nur jedes IR-Preset mit Box und Mikro gestaltet werden, nein: Man kann zu jedem der Slots auch noch eine virtuelle Endstufe dazuwählen, mit 6L6, EL34 oder EL84-Charakteristik, was jeweils einen Unterschied wie Tag und Nacht ausmacht. UND einen EQ mit Low und High Cut. UND Resonance- und Presence-Grundeinstellung. Ein Traum für jeden Sound-Bastler.

Etwas erschöpft hab ich das Ding dann ausgestöpselt und der einfachsten denkbaren Konfiguration zugeführt, als Tretmine vor dem leicht angezerrten Clean-Kanal meines Marshall Combos. Und was soll ich sagen: Da darf Schluss sein mit der Fummelei. Ein Tritt, und ein Wahnsinns-Hardrock-Schub kommt aus dem D.10!

Man muss sich angesichts all dessen fragen, ob das D.10 überhaupt noch Tretmine/ Hybridamp ist oder in Wahrheit schon Modeling-Floorboard mit Verstärker. Denn wenn man das Teil an den PC anschließt, wird erst einmal die Firmware upgedatet, und ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass es weitere Software-Upgrades geben wird, wie bei einem Modeler. Zum Beispiel, um die kleinen Bugs zu beseitigen, die mir aufgefallen sind: der sehr leise Cab Rig-Kopfhörerausgang und der Regelweg der Gain-Potis (zwischen 12.30 und 13.30 entstehen 80% des Schubs). Aber so oder so - es klingt mördergut, besser, als alles andere, das ich getestet habe.

Und mit dem Effektweg und vorgeschalteten Boostern oder Overdrives hab ich noch nicht einmal angefangen.

I purchased this pedal encouraged by the many positive reviews found on Youtube. On paper it is perfect for those like me who are looking for an ampless solution by taking advantage of the two channels (clean and OD) and a cab and mic simulation with the CabRig system that Blackstar markets as revolutionary. Unfortunately, the reality is that the pedal does not live up to its promises. After 6 months of use, I am still struggling to find a cab/mic combination that I am fully satisfied with. It's not that the options are not there, but none sound good all the way through for me even spending hours tweaking the numerous settings in the Architect software

Also, after a few months I have noticed a problem with the clean channel of my pedal: when I engage channel 1 on clean voicing the sound is completely unusable due to a crackling sound that disappears only by setting the gain knob on channel 2 to zero. I reported the problem to Thomann who invited me to return the pedal to Germany and then send it to the manufacturer for repair. After a few weeks I received the pedal at home with no further communication, only a note in German that seemed to say that the valve was replaced as a precaution. Unfortunately the problem is still there, at this point I wonder if this is a problem with my unit (in which case I would expect at least a full replacement) or if this is normal behavior (in which case I would definitely advise against buying this pedal).
