Needs some work, then ready to play

I bought this djembe because of the price, feedback and position in the "league" table.

First of all, do not be deceived when told this drum is tuned and ready to play......it is not! Mine sounded like a tin dustbin lid; the base, tone and slap were indistinguishable and a truly awful sound. My teacher tuned it up for me and NOW it sounds like a really decent djembe.

Second, in case you are expecting darker wood, the wood has been stained and is not naturally dark. Mine came with some scratches on (I don't mind that) and I plan to sand it back a bit and oil it to protect it. I will also put an old bicycle tyre around the bottom to stop the wood splitting in case of undue stress.

It's beautifully light so easy to carry. I trimmed off some of the goat skin and vacuumed the rest (it moults a lot). The surface, although shaved, needs sanding to get a smoother finish.

I've played three djembes regularly and tried out a fair number. This one I have bought, having been tuned and tweaked, is now really lovely and I'm very pleased with it.

This djembe is very good to play. Plenty of depth and the edge slap is so bright and sharp. String quality feels and looks pretty good too. Good build quality. I love the design too. It's 5 cm taller than my other similar djembes and with a slightly wider diameter at the bottom, which means it needs to be pushed hard into my djembe bag and sticks up a little too so I will have to be careful that the zip and seams don't break. That's my only negative comment about it though. I love that the hair has been left around the outside of the skin.

I absolutely love my djembe which I ordered purely for the look as the skin hung down, as well as its lovely deep tone. I had to do a tutorial on how to tighten the skin when I got it as it was really loose but got a lot of satisfaction through doing this myself and 'McGuinty' as I affectionately call him now sounds superb. I play in an African Drumming Band and this drum has served me well in all environments. Only down point is the sheer weight as we stand and play with a harness but I can't seem to find any lighter djembes that haven't had their skins chopped back which is a shame as I would give this company much more business if they did this. I also had to sand the skin quite a bit when it arrived as I was cutting my hands playing it. Excellent now though. Would recommend this to anyone. Beautiful drum :-)
