an excellent deal

Well, the only way to get a genuine 8 string renaissance lute, was to spend thousands to get a custom built one. Until now! Thomann supplied a quality instrument for the money, well made and sounds great, plus you get a quality padded gigbag. Even to get exactly the same instrument, from a luthier, would cost 3 or 4 times as much. A fascinating instrument for the price of a decent guitar.

Impossible to tune and poorly constructed

I purchased this expecting while not a perfect instrument, at least something that could hold a tune for more than a few seconds. The pegs slip constantly or are otherwise stiff, a fret is placed in the wrong place and the instrument is completely unplayable. I am extremely disappointed since I expected something a lot more from thomann. Will most likely be returning if I can't get it set up

Awful experience

I own many string instruments and this is the worst I’ve ever seen.
I’m used to tune my violin but I couldn’t manage to tune it properly and snapped 2 strings in the process (sharp neck hole).
Its too light, way lighter than my cheapest violin (100£)

Je voulais un instrument qui change de la guitare, sans devoir réapprendre à jouer d'un instrument, et j'ai été servi !

Ce luth a de très grandes qualités, cependant quelques petits défauts sont à noter :

Les + :

- Bel instrument, très léger
- Sonorité agréable, voyage dans le temps garanti ;)

Les - :

- Les chevilles d'accordage : une horreur à accorder les premiers jours, une manivelle type dunlop est la bienvenue pour tourner les chevilles qui sont enfoncées à fond (sinon elles ont tendance à sortir sous l'effet de la tension des cordes).
- Les frettes sur le manche : il s'agit en réalité de cordes nylon nouées autour du manche et maintenues en place par de légères encoches sur le bord du manche. Elles se déplacent de temps en temps, mais rien de grave, on les replace sans problème, CET INSTRUMENT SONNE JUSTE !
- Sur le modèle qui m'a été livré, les cordes étaient déjà bien usées, j'imagine que plusieurs personnes l'ont essayé en magasin ;)

Bilan : je ne regrette pas du tout cet achat et le conseille à tout musicien désireux d'élargir son horizon musical.

NB : Pour info, les tablatures pour luth ont une notation très particulière, totalement différentes de celles pour guitare, puisque on retrouve des lettres et non pas des chiffres pour indiquer les cases à jouer. Je vous conseilles donc de privilégier des partitions en notation standard (clé de fa et de sol), et de les adapter à l'instrument :)
